Three Former Greyhounds On NBA Opening Night Rosters

Three former Loyola University Maryland student-athletes are on the Opening Night rosters of NBA teams for the second-straight year with Santi Aldama and Cam Spencer representing the Memphis Grizzlies and Pat Spencer a member of the Golden State Warriors.

Aldama and Cam Spencer were a part of the Greyhounds' men's basketball freshmen class of 2019–earning Patriot League All-Rookie Team honors in 2020–and led Loyola to the 2021 Patriot League Championship Game.

Pat Spencer graduated from Loyola in 2019 as the most decorated men's lacrosse players in school history before starting his basketball career that has led him to The League. He was a four-time All-American and the winner of the 2019 Tewaaraton Award as college lacrosse's top player, graduating from Loyola as the program's all-time leader in points and assists and the NCAA Division I career leader in assists.

Aldama and Cam Spencer led the Patriot League in points or points per game in back-to-back seasons as the former earned All-Patriot League First Team in 2021 with the latter garnering the recognition the following season.

Aldama enters his fifth season with the Grizzlies after starting his NBA career as a first-round draft pick in 2021. Over four seasons, Aldama has played in 235 games and averaged 9.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Last year, he averaged a career-high 12.5 points and 6.4 rebounds, and he signed a four-year contract with Memphis during the summer. He has played in 10 career postseason games, including four last year when he averaged 13.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in the Grizzlies' series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Cam Spencer will be in his second NBA season following the 2024-25 campaign, during which he played in 25 games for the Grizzlies while averaging 4.2 points and 1.4 assists per game. During the summer, he had his rookie contract converted to a four-year deal with the team.

Pat Spencer is in his third season with the Warriors after making his NBA debut with Golden State on February 25, 2024. Last year, Spencer played in 39 regular-season games for the Warriors and averaged 2.5 points and 1.2 assists per game. He played in eight of the Warriors' post-season games and had two 11-point performances against the Houston Rockets while averaging 4.5 points overall in the playoffs.

The trio are the third, fourth and fifth former Loyola student-athletes to play in the NBA regular-season with four coming after the 1976 merger with the American Basketball Association.

Mike Morrison, '07, HOF'14, was the first Loyola player selected in the NBA Draft when he was picked by the Phoenix Suns in the second round of the 1989 draft.
