Therien Records Second-Straight Double-Double, but Women's Basketball Falls to Delaware

BALTIMORE -- Despite a back and forth contest, Delaware University used a 13-4 run over the third and fourth quarter to pull away from Loyola Unviersity Maryland on Wednesday afternoon, as the Greyhounds fell 67-55.

Loyola (1–7) stayed within striking distance most of the day, leaning on another strong performance from Lex Therien, who powered the Greyhounds with 20 points and 10 rebounds, for her second straight double-double.

The Greyhounds' best push came in the second quarter, when Cristina Garcia sparked a 6–0 run with a 3-pointer and an and-one finish to help Loyola briefly grab an 18–17 lead. Therien followed with consecutive baskets inside as Loyola matched Delaware's pace and trailed just 32–29 at halftime.

After Delaware surged ahead by double digits in the third, Loyola again responded. Therien scored three straight buckets in the paint, and Kimmie Hicks added four free throws to keep the Greyhounds within reach.

But Delaware's efficiency at the line in the fourth quarter kept Loyola from closing the gap. The Greyhounds continued to generate opportunities, but could not mount the late comeback.

Hicks contributed nine points and three steals, while Garcia added a season-best nine points to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Loyola outscored Delaware in the paint, 34–24, but Delaware finished 21-24 from the foul line on the afternoon.

Loyola returns to action next Thursday, when they travel to face local foe, Towson, at 11:00 AM.
