Rangel To Compete In PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Loyola University Maryland's Gustavo Rangel will become the first player in both school and Patriot League history to compete in a PGA Tour event while still in school next month when he tees off at Puerto Rico Open.

Rangel, who is from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, received a sponsor's exemption to play in the event. He will compete in the tour stop March 6-9, 2025, at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

The Loyola junior has played in five events this year and picked up his first collegiate win in his first. He won The Goat hosted at the Naval Academy Golf Course, beating a field of 84 players in September.

Overall, he has four top-30 finishes and a 72.4 strokes per round scoring average.

Last summer, he finished fifth in a pair of amateur tournaments, the XCVI Campeonato Nacional Amateur (Mexico Amateur) and the Caribbean Amateur Championship. He was fourth in the Puerto Amateur and played in a trio of the United States' top amateur events: Sunnehanna Amateur, North & South Amateur and the Southern Amateur Championship.

During the summer of 2023, he was third in the Caribbean Amateur, fifth in the Golf PR Match Play Championships, and he won the Puerto Rico Island Championship.

Rangel is the first Loyola or Patriot League player to compete in a PGA Tour event while still a student-athlete.

He will be the third with Loyola ties to compete in a PGA Tour event. Brandon Berry '21, M'22, a current Korn Ferry Tour player, competed in four PGA Tour stops in 2024, and Matt Oshrine, who is now on the European Challenge Tour, was in the Corales Punta Cana Resort & Club Championship in 2020.
