Men’s Basketball Snaps Streaks With Win Over Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Loyola University Maryland men's basketball snapped a current four-game skid Sunday with a 84-65 Patriot League victory over visiting Colgate University, the Greyhounds' first win over the Raiders in more than five years.

Five Greyhounds scored in double figures, led by Jacob Theodosiou's game-high 22 points paced by 6 of 9 from 3-point range. Milos Ilic added 18 points, his twin brother Veljko scored 15, Braeden Speed finished with 11 and Jordan Stiemke tallied 10.

Loyola's victory over Colgate was its first since February 16, 2020, snapping a nine-game losing streak to the team that has won the last four Patriot League Championships.

The Greyhounds (11-16 overall, 6-10 Patriot League) never trailed in the game and went up by double digits for the first time just over five minutes into the contest. A Milos Ilic layup in the paint made it 15-4 with 14:54 to go in the first half.

Jalen Cox's jumper for the Raiders (12-16, 9-7) at 9:22 brought the Greyhounds lead to 11, 26-15, but Loyola scored 11 of the next 12 points and led by 21, 37-16, on a Theodosiou 3-pointer at 6:45.

Theodosiou scored 15 points in the first half, all coming on 3-pointers. He was 5 of 7 at the break, making four of the shots between 8:16 and 6:45, a stretch of one-minute, 31 seconds.

The Greyhounds led by 19 at the half and stretched their advantage to 23 with a Veljko Ilic second-chance basket at 14:42.

Loyola's lead was 17, 66-49, following two Stiemke free throws at 8:19, but the Raiders scored the next eight points to narrow the gap to nine after a Chandler Baker basket at 6:48 made it 66-57.

Tyson Commander grabbed an offensive rebound on the next Loyola possession, and Speed converted for the second-chance points to stop the run and start an 8-0 stretch for the Greyhounds. Two Theodosiou free throws with 4:33 left made it 74-57 Loyola, and the Greyhounds did not lead by less than 15 the remainder of the game.

The Greyhounds held the Patriot League's top shooting team to 44.6 percent from the field after the Raiders entered averaging 46.7 percent.

Loyola also limited Colgate's top scorer, Jeff Woodward, to only five points on six shots in 28 minutes. Woodward came into the game averaging 15.4 per contest.

On the offensive side of the court, the Greyhounds shot 50.8 percent from the field and 46.2 from 3-point range, making a season-high 12 shots from behind the arc.

The Greyhounds also had a 33-29 advantage on the class, led by nine rebounds from Milos Ilic, eight by Theodosiou and five by Veljko Ilic.

Loyola accumulated a season-best 20 assists and had only 10 turnovers, while the Raiders gave away the ball 15 times. Speed led Loyola with six assists and three steals, and Milos Ilic dished out five assists. Commander also had three steals and Stiemke blocked three shots.

The Greyhounds will be back on the court for their final regular-season home game Wednesday, February 26, against Bucknell University at 7 p.m.
