FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason came back from a third-set loss to top Loyola University Maryland volleyball in four on Sunday afternoon, 25-17, 26-24, 23-25, 25-17.
Kacy Sekunda had a team-high 15 kills for the Greyhounds, and
Ava Nepkin added 10, while
Addie Huber led all players with 23 digs.
An
Ellie Joffe kill late in the second set tied the frame at 22-22, and Loyola took a one-point lead after a Patriots' hitting error before George Mason came back to tie at 23-23. Joffe had another kill, one of her five, and Loyola had set-point at 24-23. The Patriots, however, came back with the next three points to win the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third, Sekunda had a kill to put Loyola up 21-14, but George Mason reeled off seven in a row to tie the score. Huber had a kill for to sideout, and Sekunda served an ace to put Loyola up a pair. The Patriots rallied to tie at 23-23, but Nepkin sided out with a kill, and a George Mason attack error gave the Greyhounds a chance in the fourth set.
The Patriots built a 16-9 lead in that stanza, however, and went on for the win.
Loyola closed non-conference play with teh match and will open Patriot Leaqgue play on Friday, September 19, with a 6 p.m. match against Holy Cross.
