The Matchup
  • The Greyhounds return on the road on Saturday afternoon, as they face familiar foe in Iona at 1:00 PM. 
  • This will be the 32nd meeting between the programs, and just the second since Loyola left the MAAC, with Iona winning 2-0 last season.
  • This will cap off a three-game road trip for Loyola, before they return to Ridley on Tuesday.

  • The Greyhounds entered the season picked to finish in fourth place in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, earning 54 points in the poll.
  • Loyola finished the 2024 season in sixth place in the Patriot League, losing to American in penalty kicks 5-4, in the Patriot League Quarterfinals.
  • Graduate defender Jordy Luchies was named to the Patriot League Preseason All-League Team for the Greyhounds. 
  • Steve Nichols enters his 12th season at the helm for the Greyhounds, and has amassed a record of 77-71-40 (48-27-17) during his tenure. 

Key Returners
  • The Greyhounds will have a lot of new faces in 2025, as they feature 13 new players on the roster.
  • Despite this, they still return some key pieces from last years' team. 
  • Dylan Van der Walt, who started every game in goal last season, returns for the Greyhounds and looks to return to his form from the 2023 season. 
  • In the back line, Luchies returns with Charlie Herley, Chris Ogor, and Oscar Halls, all who started at least 13 games last season. 
  • In the midfield, Richie Nichols returns for his final season, joined by Ben Schouten, who aims to make a big step in the Greyhounds midfield this season.
  • Sophomore's Eddie Smith and Tyler Flynn will also look to build off of their strong freshman campaign's.

More On Luchies
  • Luchies enters his final collegiate season as one of the Greyhounds' captains, joined by Richie Nichols
  • Luchies has played in 62 career games, starting in 60 of those games, as he is the lone remaining player from Loyola's 2021 Patriot League Championship team. 
  • Through his 62 games, Luchies has scored five goals and recorded seven assists from the Greyhounds back line. 
  • Luchies was the 2024 Patriot League Men's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year and is a Two-Time First Team All-Patriot League honoree. 

Scouting Iona
  • The Gaels come into the matchup with a 0-1-2 record on the season, after tying their first two games of the season against Rhode Island (2-2) and Villanova (1-1), before losing to Monmouth on Tuesday, 2-1. 
  • Iona has scored in each game this season, with four different goal scorers this season. Likewise, Loyola has gone 278 minutes without a goal. 
  • In goal, Fernando Alves, Schmelz has played every minute in goal this season, tallying a 0.667 save percentage, 10 saves, and a 1.67 GAA through 270 minutes. 
  • Iona scored the first goal in each of their two ties this seaosn, while in their lone loss, Monmouth scored the opening goal. 
  • In the MAAC Preseason Poll, Iona was picked to repeat as MAAC Champions, as they received 161 points and 8 first place votes in the poll. 
  • Despite being picked first, the Gaels had no players on the Preseason All-MAAC Team.

  • The Greyhounds are 49-15-15 in the Patriot League since the beginning of the 2016 season. 
  • In 2022, the Greyhounds set a program-high with 8 ties on the season.
  • The Greyhounds are 19-1-3 since the beginning of the 2021 season when scoring multiple goals. They are also 18-1-1 when leading at halftime and 17-4-13 when they out shoot opponents since the beginning of 2021. 
  • When holding opponents to one goal last season, the Greyhounds were 3-1-1. 
  • When scoring first on the season, Loyola was 4-2-2 last season.
  • Since the beginning of the 2021 season, Loyola is 3-5-3 in the month of August. 
  • Loyola is 2-1-2 in season openers since 2021, with their last win prior to this season coming in 2021 against UC Irvine at home.

Non-Conference Play
  • Over the past five seasons (excluding the 2020 season), the Greyhounds are 14-22-16 in non-conference play. 
  • Loyola has played all of their non-conference foes at least once before, and will face a familiar foe Iona, whom the Greyhounds were in the MAAC with prior to joining the Patriot League. 
  • During the 2024 season, the Greyhounds went 1-4-2 in non-conference play. Of their four losses, three of them came to ranked opponents.
  • Five of Loyola's eight non-conference games will be on the road this season, including five of their last six non-conference games being on the road.

Eyes On The Defense
  • After a uncharacteristic 2024 season where the Greyhounds were tied for the most goals allowed in the Patriot League, Loyola looks to get back to their ways of having one of the best defense's in the Patriot League. 
  • Loyola allowed the fewest goals in the Patriot League in the 2021 and 2023 seasons, while ranking tied for third in goals allowed in 2022. .
  • Two-time Patriot League First Team Selection Jordy Luchies and 2023 Rookie of the Year Chris Ogor return, while they will be joined by seniors Curtis Wagner, and Charlie Herley. Eddie Smith, Brandon Meminger, Oscar Halls, and Freshman Jack Endacott will all look to boost the Greyhounds defense.
