BOSTON — Lex Therien scored a game-high 21 points as Loyola University Maryland held off Boston University 56-55 on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
Amandine Amorich added 15 points and Koi Sims pulled down 15 rebounds, including 8 offensive rebounds as the Greyhounds (8-9, 4-2 Patriot League) snapped a tight back-and-forth game with poise down the stretch. .
Kailey Kalet started the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, as Amorich and Therien followed it up with baskets. Therien added another basket, as the Greyhounds opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run, to lead 50-42.
Boston battled back, however, as they used a 10-4 run of their own to cut their deficit down to two points with 19 seconds remaining. After a Therien layup to extend the lead to four points, the Terriers responded with a three to trail by one with five seconds left.
Despite missing both free throws, Loyola would hold on for the 56-55 win.
The Greyhounds forced 20 turnovers and converted them into 22 points, offsetting Boston University's advantage from 3-point range. Loyola also won the battle inside, scoring 28 points in the paint and grabbing 15 offensive rebounds that converted to 11 second-chance points.
Sims finished with seven points and four assists to go with her 15 rebounds on the glass, while Whitley Watkins provided four points off the bench. Loyola shot 40.4 percent from the field.
Boston University (5-12, 1-5) was led by Anastasiia Semenova and Inés Monteagudo, who scored 12 points apiece. The Terriers shot 47.8 percent from beyond the arc but couldn't overcome the turnover margin.
Loyola returns to Reitz Arena on Wednesday evening, as they will host Lehigh University at 7:00 PM.
