Quick Hits

  • Loyola University Maryland men's basketball will open its 114th season of competition on Monday, November 2, 2026, with a trip to Washington, D.C., for a game with fellow Jesuit school Georgetown University.
  • Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Capital One Arena with the game broadcast on ESPN+.
  • November 2 is the earliest Loyola has ever played a regular-season game in men's basketball with last year's season opener against Towson University on November 3, 2025, the previous.
  • Monday's game is the first of 13 on the non-conference slate for Loyola.
  • Josh Loeffler is in his third year as the Greyhounds' head coach after taking the position as Loyola's 22nd all-time head coach in March 2024. In his first year, he led the Greyhounds to a five-win improvement over the 2023-24 season.

Series History

  • Loyola and Georgetown will meet for the 46th time in series history and the first time in almost 16 years when the teams open the 2026-27 season on Monday night.
  • The Hoyas lead the series, 36-9, and are winners of the last five meetings between the programs.
  • The teams last met on December 18, 2010, when Georgetown hosted the Greyhounds at the Verizon Center (now Capital One Arena). Georgetown outscored Loyola 50-27 in the first half, and the Hoyas improved to 10-1 on the season with a 99-75 win. Justin Drummond made his collegiate debut in the game for Loyola with 21 points, while Erik Etherly and Dylon Cormier scored 12 and 11 points.
  • That game was the first between the teams since December 3, 1974. Loyola's last win in the season came on February 11, 1971, when the Greyhounds broke an 18-game Georgetown winning streak.
  • Loyola and Georgetown first met on January 13, 1910, during the Greyhounds' first season of organized competition. The Hoyas were Loyola's second intercollegiate opponent behind a game against CCNY.

Watch The Action

  • Monday's game will stream live on ESPN+.
  • All Loyola home games this season will also stream live on ESPN+ and be available internationally on Sidearm.

Last Time Out

  • Loyola finished the 2025-26 season with a 12-20 record and 8-10 mark in the Patriot League, tying for the best record the Greyhounds have had in the conference since joining the group in 2013-14. Loyola was the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Championships before falling in the quarterfinal round.
  • A pair of Greyhounds earned All-Patriot League honors with its two leading scorers, Braeden Speed and Emmett Adair, named to the second and third teams, respectively. Adair also earned All-Rookie honors.
  • Speed led the Greyhounds with 15.3 points per game, while Adair averaged 14.6 and a team- best 5.4 rebounds.

Six Back

  • In an era of significant roster turnover, Loyola did feel the effects during the offseason, but a core of six returners who have all played significant minutes are back for Head Coach Josh Loeffler.
  • Four players return after seeing more than 400 minutes of game action a year ago, led by Sam Springer who started 31 of 32 games (only non-start was senior day) and averaged 16.9 minutes per game.
  • Sebastien Emenalo and Carter Berg-McLean averaged 14.5 and 14.0 minutes per game, respectively, in their first collegiate seasons, while Troy Cicero Jr. averaged 13.9.
  • Everett Barnes made five starts for the Greyhounds in the post, and Goap Kodi returns, too, after missing the 2025-26 season with an injury.

New Faces

Far & Wide

  • Loyola's roster represents 10 states and five countries; players hail from all four mainland United States time zones.
  • Carter Berg-McLean is the furthest from home when he is on Loyola's Charles Street campus. He is in his fourth year in the United States after spending two years at Georgetown Prep outside Washington, D.C., and 2025-26 at Loyola, but the Evergreen campus is 8,794 miles from Berg-McLean's hometown of Wellington, New Zealand.
  • Sebastien Emanelo's hometown of Walton-on-Thames, England is 3,623 miles away, Alex Huguet checks in at 4,098 miles from Portol, Spain, on the island of Mallorca, slightly closer than Abdullah Amzil's hometown of Helsinki, Finland at 4,273 miles away.
  • Leo Ricketts and Ezekiel Walker give the Greyhounds a set of teammates from the same home state. Both hail from Northern California. Robbie Long III is also from the Pacific Time Zone and Portland, Oregon. Everett Barnes and Seamus Bieg are also teammates from New Jersey.
  • D'Andre Harrison represents the Mountain Time Zone and the Grand Canyon State after coming from the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert, Arizona.
  • Troy Cicero Jr. is the lone Central Time Zone player out of Joliet, Illinois.
  • Gage Howard Jr. is the Greyhounds player closest to home, with his address just over eight miles from the Loyola campus.

Cicero With Seniority

  • Troy Cicero Jr. is the Greyhounds lone senior in 2026-27 but he brings a presence that helps represent Loyola and the Patriot League on the national level.
  • Cicero serves as a Patriot League representative on the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Student-Athlete Engagement Group. The committee gives current players a direct channel to provide feedback to NCAA decision-makers on rules, policies and issues affecting their sport.
  • He is also a student-athlete representative  to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Playing Rules Subcommittee. This group focuses on playing rules, reviewing officiating issues and considering experimental rules.
  • On the court, Cicero missed all but four games of his freshman campaign due to injury, but he has played in 50 over the last two years for Loyola including all 32 last year.
  • He shot 37.4 percent from 3-point range in 2025-26 and is the team's leading returning scorer at 5.8 points per game.

Confidence Through The Conference

  • Playing time for Carter Berg-McLean and Sebastien Emenalo grew significantly as the 2025-26 season wore on, particularly during the 18-game Patriot League regular-season.
  • Berg-McLean averaged just 6.9 minutes per game in the opening 13 games of the non-conference slate, but he was then save 18.2 minutes per game in League play and was second on the team with 35 assists during Patriot League games.
  • Berg-McLean took good care of the ball during conference games with a team-leading 2.3:1 assist-to-turnover ratio in those outings.
  • Emenalo saw a bit more action in non-conference play last year with 11.4 minutes per game, but that total rose to 16.8 in the Patriot League.
  • He was Loyola's No. 3 rebounder in conference games, averaging 4.2 per game.

At The Next Level

  • As a school of less than 4,000 undergraduate students, Loyola University Maryland boasted three former student-athletes on NBA rosters as players last month on opening night. Two members of the men's basketball incoming class of 2019, Santi Aldama (SAHN-tee ALL-dah-muh) and Cam Spencer play for the Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies, respectively, and four-time men's lacrosse All-American Pat Spencer is a member of the Phoenix Suns.
  • Aldama was a first-round draft pick in the 2021 NBA Draft after leading the Patriot League in scoring and rebounding in 2020-21, and Cam Spencer led the conference in scoring the following season. He has played in 278 NBA games and averaged 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds last season with Memphis after signing a four-year contract during the summer of 2025. He has starred for his native Spain, earning TISSOT Most Outstanding Player honors at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament before averaging 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games during the Olympics.
  • Cam Spencer, who was a three-year starter for the Greyhounds from 2019-22, and won an NCAA Championship at Connecticut in 2023-24, made his NBA debut on November 20, 2024 for the Grizzlies and averaged 11.1 points and 5.6 assists in 72 games last season.
  • Pat Spencer holds the Loyola men's lacrosse records for career assists and points and was the 2019 NCAA Division I Player of the Year for the Greyhounds. He switched to basketball after graduating from Loyola and played in 111 regular-season, plus eight playoff, games from 2023-2026 with the Golden State Warriors. He made his Suns debut on opening night.
  • The trio comprise three of the five former Greyhounds who have played in the NBA. Mike Morrison was a second-round pick of the Suns in 1989 and played in 36 games as a rookie for Phoenix. Andy O'Donnell played for the 1949-50 Baltimore Bullets in the precursor to the current NBA.
  • Another former Greyhounds player, Michael Malone, '94, was a head coach for 12 years in the NBA, leading the Denver Nuggets to the 2022-23 World Championship. He is now in his first year as head coach at the University of North Carolina.

  • Loyola then opens its home slate with a Monday, November 9, contest against Washington College.
  • The Greyhounds will play in the inaugural 410 Invitational sponsored by Under Armour November 12-14. Loyola first plays at Towson on Thursday, November 12, and it will then take on either UMBC or Morgan State University on Saturday, November 14.
