BALTIMORE – Army West Point's Lily Marquez scored less than five minutes before halftime, and the Black Knights saved a Loyola University Maryland penalty kick in the second half to secure a 1-0 Patriot League decision on Saturday at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Marquez touched a ball to Bella Conti who then cut to her left and slid a pass to Marquez inside the 18.
Marquez's shot went into the right side of the goal to put Army West Point on top, 1-0, in the 41st minute.
Loyola looked to equalize early in the second half when
Brigid McElderry had a shot that was saved by Karalyn Dail less than 90 seconds into the half.
When the ball was cleared out, A Loyola player took a touch that was initially not called as a penalty, but after a VAR challenge by the Greyhounds, a penalty kick was assessed to Loyola for a Black Knights handball in the box.
Dail, however, made a diving stop on a
Betzael Contreras penalty kick at 46:33 that preserved the Army West Point lead. Loyola maintained possession after the save, and 13 seconds later, Contreras curled a hard shot from 20 yards out that just bounced off the top woodwork to deny the equalizing chance.
Loyola had another shot on goal in the 57th minute with a
Savannah Manset attempt that was saved, and Manset had a shot in the 84th that went just wide right.
Dail finished with a clean sheet and four saves for Army West Point, and Hannan Goetzer had two saves for Loyola.
The Greyhounds will close their regular season on Wednesday, November 4, with an 8 p.m. game at the U.S. Naval Academy.
