EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. –
Eli Spaulding and
Zach Berger shot 1-under and 1-over par, respectively, on Tuesday to lead the Loyola University Maryland golf team to an eighth-place tie at the seventh edition of the Hamptons Intercollegiate.
The Greyhounds had the sixth-best round as a team on a day that started with sustained winds of 25 miles per hour at Maidstone Club. Loyola shot 12-over in the third and final round and tied for eighth with Duke at the 54-hole tournament that the Greyhounds host.
Florida won the team title at 6-under par despite shooting 6-over 294 as a team on Tuesday. The Gators took top honors by 15 shots over second-place Rutgers. Wake Forest finished third, followed by Florida State, Utah, Mississippi, Princeton, the Blue Devils and Greyhounds.
Utah's Gabriel Palacios won the individual race by seven strokes at 12-under 204.
Spaulding's 1-under on Tuesday was his best of the tournament, and he tied for 13th individually at 3-over 219. After a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole, he closed with five-straight pars to finish his round.
Berger matched Spaulding's 71 in the first round and shot 1-over 73 on Tuesday to finishing inside the top-25, tying for 22nd.
Diego Neira and
Liam Moloney tied for 38th and 40th, respectively, at 10- and 11-over for the tournament following rounds of 4- and 8-over on Tuesday.
Jack Geyer closed out the team scoring with a tie for 61st.
Matthew Simpson played as an individual at the event and earned another top-25 finish for the Greyhounds. He shot 1-over 73 in the final round to tie with Berger and others for 22nd. Simpson had rounds of 75-74-73 at the tournament.
