Quick Hits

  • Loyola University Maryland men's basketball stays on the road for its second match of the year, heading to Emmitsburg, Maryland, to face Mount St. Mary's University in a 7 o'clock tipoff on Friday, November 6.
  • The game is slated to stream live on ESPN+.
  • Twelve of 13 Greyhounds who saw playing time in the season opener at Georgetown scored.
  • Carter Berg-McLean matched his career-high with seven assists against the Hoyas.
  • Friday's game is the second of 13 on the non-conference slate for Loyola.
  • Josh Loeffler is in his third year as the Greyhounds' head coach after taking the position as Loyola's 22nd all-time head coach in March 2024. In his first year, he led the Greyhounds to a five-win improvement over the 2023-24 season.

Series History

  • Loyola and Mount St. Mary's will meet Friday in the most-played match-up in State of Maryland college basketball history.
  • The Greyhounds and Mountaineers will play for the 180th time in a series that began on January 20, 1910, when Loyola earned a 35-24 victory in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
  • That game would kick off a rivalry that has  lasted 116 years.
  • Mount St. Mary's leads the all-time series, 102-77, after taking an 81-73 decision last season in Baltimore.
  • In  the 2026 game, Loyola took a 43-42 lead on a Sam Springer basket 2:17 into the second half, but the Mountaineers scored 12 of the next 14 points.

Watch The Action

  • Friday's game will stream live on ESPN+.
  • All Loyola home games this season will also stream live on ESPN+ and be available internationally on Sidearm.

Coaching Ties

  • The Loyola and Mount St. Mary's coaching staffs share a tie that goes back two decades. Greyhounds Assistant Coach Kevin Farrell and Mountaineers Head Coach Donny Lind are both Loyola graduates and were team managers together for two years, 2008-2010, under then-Head Coach Jimmy Patsos.

Last Time Out

  • Georgetown built a 24-point lead 16 minutes into Monday night's season-opener, and Loyola pulled within 11 on several occasions in the second half, the Hoyas went on to an 80-58 victory at Capital One Arena.
  • Vince Iwchukwu scored two of his 21 points on an interior basket with 4:09 to play in the first half and Georgetown led, 41-18. The Hoyas carried the 24-point lead into halftime, and they would extend the gap to 26 just over a minute into the second with another Iwchukwu basket.
  • Loyola began to chip away at the margin two possessions later with Leo Ricektts' first three of the game at 16:46. D'Andre Harrison followed with a pair of points on a driving layup, and the Greyhounds were down 50-30.
  • Troy Cicero Jr. and Robbie Long III hit threes from the right side on consecutive possessions for Loyola, and the Greyhounds moved within 14, 50-36. After a Williams three went off target for the Hoyas, Long hit another three at 14:12, and Loyola was within 11.
  • The teams traded baskets on the next five possessions with Rickets converting twice at the rim for Loyola, and then at 11:17, Everett Barnes had a putback dunk to keep the margin at 11. Georgetown, however, scored the next 16 points over a span of 6:42.
  • Jaland Lowe led the Hoyas with 23 points, and Iwchukwu had 21. Ricketts led Loyola with 10 points, all in the second half. Barnes and Sebastien Emenalo both scored seven, while Harrison had six as did Long and Gage Howard Jr. in their collegiate debuts.
  • Emenalo grabbed a team-best eight rebounds for Loyola, and Carter Berg-McLean had seven assists against just one turnover.

Sophomore Stat Stuffing

  • Carter Berg-McLean and Sebastien Emenalo made their first career starts on Monday in the Greyhounds' season opener at Georgetown and each led the team statistically in various categories.
  • Emenalo finished one off his career-high with eight rebounds, three on the offensive glass.
  • Berg-McLean had a game-high seven assists while only committing one turnover. The seven assists tied a career-high, and his 7:1 assist-to-turnover ratio were tied for 10th best in the nation on opening night.
  • Berg-McLean's previous career-high of seven assists also came on a low turnover night. He had seven dimes without a turnover in a  January 19, 2026, game at Lehigh.

First-Year Debuts

  • A pair of freshmen, Gage Howard Jr. and Robbie Long III, were the first two Greyhounds off the bench Monday night at Georgetown, and the pair combined to play more than 40 minutes while each scoring six points.
  • Howard and Long also had two of the better plus-minus performances for the Greyhounds in the game with Howard finishing as a plus-one and Long as a minus-seven.
  • Long settled in after halftime and made a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed three rebounds, while Howard was 3 of 6 overall from the field.

No Charity To The Stripe

  • Loyola did not make a free throw in its first game of the season and only went to the line twice during the entire game. The Greyhounds were one of two NCAA Division I teams to not make a free throw in a game so far this season (Niagara at West Virginia, 11/2/26), and it was the first time the Greyhounds did not make one from the charity stripe since going 0-2 in a 56-55 loss at home to Navy on February 5, 2022.
  • The Greyhounds were awarded only two free throws – both on one first-half shooting foul – despite taking 29 shots inside the paint (making 14) versus the Hoyas. Georgetown, meanwhile, took the same number of shots inside the painted area and went to the line 17 times.

Six Back

  • In an era of significant roster turnover, Loyola did feel the effects during the offseason, but a core of six returners who have all played significant minutes are back for Head Coach Josh Loeffler.
  • Four players return after seeing more than 400 minutes of game action a year ago, led by Sam Springer who started 31 of 32 games (only non-start was senior day) and averaged 16.9 minutes per game.
  • Sebastien Emenalo and Carter Berg-McLean averaged 14.5 and 14.0 minutes per game, respectively, in their first collegiate seasons, while Troy Cicero Jr. averaged 13.9.
  • Everett Barnes made five starts for the Greyhounds in the post, and Goap Kodi returns, too, after missing the 2025-26 season with an injury.

New Faces

Far & Wide

  • Loyola's roster represents 10 states and five countries; players hail from all four mainland United States time zones.
  • Carter Berg-McLean is the furthest from home when he is on Loyola's Charles Street campus. He is in his fourth year in the United States after spending two years at Georgetown Prep outside Washington, D.C., and 2025-26 at Loyola, but the Evergreen campus is 8,794 miles from Berg-McLean's hometown of Wellington, New Zealand.
  • Sebastien Emanelo's hometown of Walton-on-Thames, England is 3,623 miles away, Alex Huguet checks in at 4,098 miles from Portol, Spain, on the island of Mallorca, slightly closer than Abdullah Amzil's hometown of Helsinki, Finland at 4,273 miles away.
  • Leo Ricketts and Ezekiel Walker give the Greyhounds a set of teammates from the same home state. Both hail from Northern California. Robbie Long III is also from the Pacific Time Zone and Portland, Oregon. Everett Barnes and Seamus Bieg are also teammates from New Jersey.
  • D'Andre Harrison represents the Mountain Time Zone and the Grand Canyon State after coming from the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert, Arizona.
  • Troy Cicero Jr. is the lone Central Time Zone player out of Joliet, Illinois.
  • Gage Howard Jr. is the Greyhounds player closest to home, with his address just over eight miles from the Loyola campus.

Cicero With Seniority

  • Troy Cicero Jr. is the Greyhounds lone senior in 2026-27 but he brings a presence that helps represent Loyola and the Patriot League on the national level.
  • Cicero serves as a Patriot League representative on the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Student-Athlete Engagement Group. The committee gives current players a direct channel to provide feedback to NCAA decision-makers on rules, policies and issues affecting their sport.
  • He is also a student-athlete representative  to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Playing Rules Subcommittee. This group focuses on playing rules, reviewing officiating issues and considering experimental rules.
  • On the court, Cicero missed all but four games of his freshman campaign due to injury, but he has played in 50 over the last two years for Loyola including all 32 last year.
  • He shot 37.4 percent from 3-point range in 2025-26 and is the team's leading returning scorer at 5.8 points per game.

Confidence Through The Conference

  • Playing time for Carter Berg-McLean and Sebastien Emenalo grew significantly as the 2025-26 season wore on, particularly during the 18-game Patriot League regular-season.
  • Berg-McLean averaged just 6.9 minutes per game in the opening 13 games of the non-conference slate, but he was then save 18.2 minutes per game in League play and was second on the team with 35 assists during Patriot League games.
  • Berg-McLean took good care of the ball during conference games with a team-leading 2.3:1 assist-to-turnover ratio in those outings.
  • Emenalo saw a bit more action in non-conference play last year with 11.4 minutes per game, but that total rose to 16.8 in the Patriot League.
  • He was Loyola's No. 3 rebounder in conference games, averaging 4.2 per game.

At The Next Level

  • As a school of less than 4,000 undergraduate students, Loyola University Maryland boasted three former student-athletes on NBA rosters as players last month on opening night. Two members of the men's basketball incoming class of 2019, Santi Aldama (SAHN-tee ALL-dah-muh) and Cam Spencer play for the Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies, respectively, and four-time men's lacrosse All-American Pat Spencer is a member of the Phoenix Suns.
  • Aldama was a first-round draft pick in the 2021 NBA Draft after leading the Patriot League in scoring and rebounding in 2020-21, and Cam Spencer led the conference in scoring the following season. He has played in 278 NBA games and averaged 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds last season with Memphis after signing a four-year contract during the summer of 2025. He has starred for his native Spain, earning TISSOT Most Outstanding Player honors at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament before averaging 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games during the Olympics.
  • Cam Spencer, who was a three-year starter for the Greyhounds from 2019-22, and won an NCAA Championship at Connecticut in 2023-24, made his NBA debut on November 20, 2024 for the Grizzlies and averaged 11.1 points and 5.6 assists in 72 games last season.
  • Pat Spencer holds the Loyola men's lacrosse records for career assists and points and was the 2019 NCAA Division I Player of the Year for the Greyhounds. He switched to basketball after graduating from Loyola and played in 111 regular-season, plus eight playoff, games from 2023-2026 with the Golden State Warriors. He made his Suns debut on opening night.
  • The trio comprise three of the five former Greyhounds who have played in the NBA. Mike Morrison was a second-round pick of the Suns in 1989 and played in 36 games as a rookie for Phoenix. Andy O'Donnell played for the 1949-50 Baltimore Bullets in the precursor to the current NBA.
  • Another former Greyhounds player, Michael Malone, '94, was a head coach for 12 years in the NBA, leading the Denver Nuggets to the 2022-23 World Championship. He is now in his first year as head coach at the University of North Carolina.

Up Next

  • Loyola opens its home slate with a Monday, November 9, contest against Washington College.
  • The Greyhounds will play in the inaugural 410 Invitational sponsored by Under Armour November 12-14. Loyola first plays at Towson on Thursday, November 12, and it will then take on either UMBC or Morgan State University on Saturday, November 14.
