Men’s Hoops Forces Overtime, But Colgate Wins In Extra Time

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Jacob Theodosiou scored two of his team-high 25 points on a driving layup with 17 seconds left in regulation to the game, and Tyson Commander solid defense on a Jalen Cox drive in the final seconds helped Loyola University Maryland men's basketball force overtime on Saturday, but Colgate University used the extra five minutes for a 101-98 Patriot League win on its home court.

Loyola trailed by 10, 80-70, with 2:46 left in regulation after Cox made the second of two at the free-throw line, but the Greyhound scored the next eight points, and a Troy Cicero Jr. 3-pointer with 87 seconds left made it a two-point gap.

Cox scored two of his 38 points on Colgate's next possession for an 82-78 Raiders lead. Loyola had a held-ball call with the possession arrow on its next possession, and off the baseline out-of-bounds play, Braeden Speed threw it to Jordan Stiemke at the top of the perimeter, and Stiemke immediately drove past his defender and got to the rim for a dunk with 54 seconds on the clock.

The Greyhounds (11-18 overall, 7-9 Patriot League) held Colgate without points on its next possession, and Theodosiou drove the left side, finishing for two for an 82-82 tie.

Cox drove on the right for Colgate (17-12, 11-5) looking to win the game in regulation, but Commander stayed horizontal and blocked Cox's attempt, sending the game to overtime.

After back-and-forth in the first two-plus minutes of overtime, Colgate went up four, 90-86, on a Cox layup, but Cicero cut it back to a one-point game with a 3-pointer with 2:02 on the clock.

Andrew Alekseyenko converted a jumper 20 seconds later for Colgate, and on the next possession, Loyola was whistled for an offensive foul. Cox made two free throws at the 46-second mark, and the margin was five or more until a Theodosiou three as time expired.

In addition to Theodosiou's 25 points that were two off his season-high, Adair had 23 and Speed 19. Stiemke scored 13, and Cicero had 11 off the bench for the Greyhounds. Speed also had seven assists, and Adair just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

Loyola returns to Reitz Arena on Wednesday, February 24, to close its home regular-season schedule with a 7 p.m. game against the U.S. Naval Academy.
