WASHINGTON (AP) — Loyola University Maryland stormed out to a dominant first half and never looked back, rolling to a 16-5 victory over American on Wednesday afternoon.
Morgan Ruhnke scored four goals to lead a balanced Loyola attack that featured 12 different goal scorers. Lauren Perfetto added a goal and four assists, while Delaney Jackson scored twice as the Greyhounds improved to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Neicia Smith and Teagan Morrissey both scored their first career goals in the win.
Loyola seized control immediately, scoring the game's first 11 goals and holding American scoreless in the first half. Ruhnke sparked the early surge with two quick strikes, and the Greyhounds closed the opening quarter on a 7-0 run behind relentless offensive pressure and draw control dominance.
The Greyhounds continued to dictate play in the second quarter, capitalizing on free-position opportunities and crisp ball movement to build an 11-0 halftime lead. Perfetto orchestrated much of the offense during the stretch, assisting on four of Loyola's first-half goals.
American (2-8, 1-2) broke through early in the third quarter, but Loyola quickly answered with three more goals, including scores from Anna Kaplan and Ruhnke, to push the margin to 14-3 entering the final period.
Loyola's control extended beyond the scoreboard. The Greyhounds dominated draw controls 19-4 and outshot American 34-19, consistently winning possession and limiting the Eagles' chances.
Makenzie Butler made four saves in the first three quarters to earn the win in goal, while Kennedy Buntrock added three saves in relief.
Reagan Murdoch led American with two goals, while Adria Kotzian had a goal and an assist.
Loyola returns to Ridley on Saturday morning, as they host the fourth-ranked Navy Midshipmen in a crucial Patriot League matchup.
