Elisa Faklaris scored her only goal of the game with 4:33 left in the fourth quarter, but proved to be the biggest goal of the game, as #16 Loyola University Maryland held on for the 9-8 win over #24 Georgetown University on Wednesday evening.
With 4:33 left in the fourth quarter,
Morgan Quade found a cutting Faklaris, who finished through some contact for the goal, to put Loyola up 9-8 late in the fourth quarter.
Mae Murphy would win the ensuing draw control for the Greyhounds, as Loyola was able to wind down a lot of the clock, before Georgetown regained possession with 1:35 remaining.
Loyola's defense stepped up, as they held Georgetown's offense on the final possession to no shots, as they forced a Hoyas turnover to secure the game.
Mim Suares-Jury led the Greyhounds with three goals and one assist on the night, while
Morgan Quade had a career-best four assists.
Ava Kane and
Delaney Jackson scored two goals each, while
Emma Talago had a goal and a assist, and Faklaris had one goal.
Loyola started the game strong in the first half, as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter, thanks in large part to three goals from Suares-Jury.
The Hoyas responded, however, as they would scored four-straight goals over the second and third quarter to tie the game at five goals a piece.
Loyola repsonded with a run of their own, as a goal from Kane and two from Jackson would give Loyola another three-goal lead.
Georgetown once again would tie the game after another run, as they tied the game at 8-8 with 7:13 remaining in the fourth quarter.
From there, Loyola's defense led the charge, as they held Georgetown to just two shots, while forcing two turnovers over the final seven minutes.
Loyola finished the game 10-10 on clears, while winning the draw battle 13-6, led by 9 draws from
Mae Murphy.
Makenzie Butler picked up the win in goal, as she recorded four saves on the night.
Gracie Driggs led the Hoyas with four goals on the night.
Loyola will have a short break before they head up to West Point on March 14, as they face Army in a crucial Patriot League matchup.
