BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse scored the first six goals of the second half and held visiting Boston University scoreless for more than 23 minutes after halftime to go on to a 13-7 victory on Sunday afternoon in the Patriot League Championships First Round.
The Greyhounds advance to the Patriot League Semifinals and will play Army West Point at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.
Seven players scored for Loyola on Sunday against Boston University with
Morgan Quade's six points on a pair of goals and four assists leading the way.
Elisa Faklaris and
Delaney Jackson both scored three times in the win.
Loyola (12-6 overall) took a 5-3 lead 49 seconds into the second quarter on Jackson's second of the game, but the Terriers (8-10) rallied to score the next three. Elle Stevenson had the first and third goals of the run, the latter on a free-position shot that put Boston University up, 6-5, with 50 ticks left in the half.
The Terriers would carry that advantage into the locker room at the break, but Loyola's defense denied them extending the run further.
Quade was a part of the first three goals of the second half for Loyola, first evening the score with an unassisted goal at 11:02 in the third quarter to kick off the 6-0 run for the Greyhounds.
She then assisted on an player-up tally by
Morgan Ruhnke with 4:07 on the clock, a goal that would put Loyola in front for good, and then assisting on
Emma Talago's score with nine seconds left in the frame.
Jackson made it 9-6 in the Greyhounds' favor with a goal 1:27 into the fourth quarter, and Faklaris added the first of her three fourth-quarter goals at 12:12.
Faklaris scored again 57 seconds later, and the Greyhounds shutout streak ended at 23 minutes, 49 seconds with a Stevenson goal with 7:41 remaining in regulation.
Faklaris and
Ava Kane added the final two goals for Loyola.
The Greyhounds had a 15-7 edge in draw controls with
Mae Murphy grabbing 10.
Reilly Mahon had three caused turnovers, and Murphy added two.
Makenzie Butler made seven saves in goal for the Greyhounds.
