BEDMINSTER, N.J. – Incoming Loyola University Maryland freshman Michael Asselta won the 105th W.Y. Dear Junior Championship, taking home the New Jersey state title for the second year in a row on Thursday and punching a return ticket to the U.S. Junior Amateur next month.
Asselta took the final match 1-up over Eric Kim to earn a berth in the 78th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship that will be held July 20-25 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The Ramsey, New Jersey, native led the final match by two holes through five at Fiddler's Elbow Country Club, but Kim came back to win the 10th and 13th holes, evening the match.
Asselta, however, carded a par on the 17th hole to take a lead going into what would be the final of the match. Both players parred the par-5 18th to give the future Greyhounds player his second win in as many years.
