BALTIMORE — Delaware used two first-half goals and another early in the second half to defeat Loyola University Maryland 3-0 on Tuesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Greyhounds (1-5) generated several opportunities throughout the match but could not find the back of the net against Delaware goalkeeper Eric Widrick, who made two saves for the shutout.
Loyola controlled stretches of the opening half offensively, outshooting Delaware 6-4 before halftime. Lukas Cortes tested Widrick twice in the first 30 minutes, but both attempts were turned away. Nick Laffey and Nino Venezia also had shots blocked as the Greyhounds continued to pressure the Blue Hens.
Delaware (3-2-1) struck first in the ninth minute when Frederik Flaskager converted a pass from Liam Penny. Flaskager doubled the lead in the 25th minute, scoring again off assists from Joe Richards and Freddy Jeffreys.
Despite trailing 2-0 at halftime, Loyola continued to compete and finished the match with 10 shots, including two on target. Felix Huebner made two saves in goal for the Greyhounds.
Delaware added to its advantage in the 64th minute when German Argueta scored off an assist from Jeffreys.
The Greyhounds continued to push for a goal late in the match. Jack Endacott had two second-half shots, including one that was blocked, while Cesare D'Amico also had a late attempt blocked. Loyola earned three corner kicks in the final 10 minutes but could not break through.
Delaware finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots and held 54% possession. Loyola earned four corner kicks to Delaware's six.
