Matt Miller, a veteran of the coaching profession in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., area, joined Tavaras Hardy’s men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant in April 2023.
Miller came to Loyola with nearly 20 years of coaching experience at the NCAA and high school levels after spending the last five seasons (2018-23) as an assistant at Mount St. Mary’s University.
Miller joined the Mount St. Mary’s staff prior to the 2018-19 season and was a part of a staff that helped guide the Mountaineers to the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
Prior to his stint at the Emmitsburg, Maryland, school, Miller was the head coach at St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown, Maryland, where he led the team to a 100-42 record during his tenure, including the two seasons with the highest win totals at the school since 1999.
He led the team to a Baltimore Catholic League (BCL) regular-season title in 2016-17, and the Gaels won their first BCL Tournament game since 2001.
A year later, St. Maria Goretti was ranked No. 7 in the USA Today Northeast Region Poll, and he was named the Baltimore Catholic League, Washington County, DMV Elite Maryland and Inside Sports Coach of the Year.
Miller was the top assistant at NCAA Division II school Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, from in 2013-14, and he helped the Rams record a 20-10 record, their best since the 1992. In his role as recruiting coordinator, he led the efforts to bring two 1,000-point scorers and three all-conference players to the school.
He was a head boys’ basketball coach in Montgomery County, Maryland, for five seasons before his time at Shepherd. He led the team at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Maryland, from 2008-13 after spending the 2007-08 season in charge at Wheaton (Md.) High School.
Miller’s first forays into the coaching profession came soon after his 2005 graduation from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He was an assistant coach at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2005-06, and he spent the 2006-07 campaign as an assistant at NCAA Division III school Marymount University in Northern Virginia.
Miller earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s in 2005 with dual major in both economics and public policy, and he graduated with his Master’s of Education in health and ESOL from Marymount in 2008. He also has a certificate in education administration from Hood College that he received in 2018.
At St. Mary’s, Miller was a three-year student-athlete and was the men’s basketball team captain in 2003-04. He earned the Capital Athletic Conference’s Student-Athlete Award in each of his final two seasons. Before attending St. Mary’s, Miller graduated from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.
