Mamadou Kansaye joined the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer program as an assistant coach in June 2018.
A Baltimore native, Kansaye brings a familiarity of local soccer to Loyola, as he won two MIAA Championships at McDonogh and three Youth National Championships with the Baltimore Bays while playing for Nichols. He also captained UMBC to the 2014 NCAA College Cup as a senior.Â
"We are ecstatic to have Mamadou on board. He's everything this program needs right now," Head Coach Steve Nichols said at the time of Kansaye's hire. "An amazing leader and winner where ever he's been, he's definitely the guy that can help us get to the next level. Whether at McDonogh, the Bays or UMBC, he was always recruiting kids to help make the team a national contender. On the field, he was the type of player that every team needs to win championships.Â
Following a standout high school career at McDonogh, where he earned NSCAA All-America honors after helping the Eagles to two MIAA Championships, Kansaye began his collegiate career at NC State. In one season with the Wolfpack, he made 15 appearances in the midfield and tallied two goals and three assists before transferring to UMBC. After sitting out the 2011 season due to NCAA Transfer rules, Kansaye made a total of 63 appearances for the Retrievers, scoring nine goals and adding 19 assists.Â
A two-year captain at UMBC, Kansaye was honored as the 2014 America East Midfielder of the Year and was twice voted to the All-America East First Team. An NCAA Senior CLASS Award top-30 candidate as a senior, he was also named to the NSCAA All-East Region First Team and to the All-ECAC First Team after captaining the Retrievers to the final four of the 2014 NCAA College Cup.Â
Post-collegiately, Kansaye had a brief playing career with Charlotte Independence in the United Soccer League.Â
"One of my dreams is to be a professional coach at the highest level possible, so I cannot begin to thank Steve enough for this opportunity," Kansaye said. "One of the reasons I stopped playing was so I could focus on coaching. When this opportunity came along, it was a bit unexpected, but it's also something that I've been ready and waiting for."
The co-Founder and President of the youth soccer training company, Homegrown Soccer Academy, Kansaye also has experience coaching Ellicott City u23s, at Centennial High School, in the Maryland State Olympic Development Program (ODP), at Hood College, at Waxhaw Soccer Academy and with the Baltimore Celtic u17 teams.Â
A 2015 graduate of UMBC, Kansaye has his bachelor of arts degree in psychology.Â
