Women's Basketball Opens the 2006-07 Season This Weekend

ABOUT THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES
Loyola opens the 2006-07 women's basketball schedule this weekend with games at Columbia and Drexel. The Greyhounds face the Lions on Friday at 1:00 and the Dragons on Sunday at 1:00.

ABOUT THE `HOUNDS
Loyola finished last season with a 20-10 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Head coach Joe Logan returns three starters and eight letterwinners. The leading returning is senior Jill Glessner who scored 10.2 points, nabbed 4.6 rebounds and dished out 2.8 assists a game last season. She is followed by classmate Brittany Dunn who average 9.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.2 steals a game. Also returning are guards Tynisha Davis, Ebony Toliver and Siobhan Prior. The returners from the post players are starter Vanessa Ruffin and Meghan Wood. Sophomore Ashley Alexander returns after splitting time between guard and forward last year. Additions include freshman guard Devon Carey, forward Kaitlin Grant and combo Eric DiClemente. Another addition late this season with be junior center Vika Sholokhova.

SCOUTING THE LIONS
Columbia finished last season with a 6-21 overall record and a 2-12 mark in the Ivy League. Head coach Paul Nixon returns 12 of 13 letterwinners from that squad and four of five starters. The Lions three leading scorers return to the mix (Megan Griffith, Michele Gage and Brittany Carfora). Griffith averaged 15,2 points, three rebounds and 5.5 assists last season while Gage scored an average of 11.4 points, pulled down 6.7 boards and dished out two assists a game. Both Griffith and Gage are both returning starters. The third leading scorer, Carfora appeared in all 27 games with eight starts. She averaged 6.7 points and 4.8 rebounds.

SERIES RECORD VS. COLUMBIA
Friday will be the first meeting between the Greyhounds and the Lions.

SCOUTING THE DRAGONS
Drexel finished last season just above 100 with a 15-14 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the conference. The Dragons, under fourth-year head coach Denise Dillon, return 10 of 15 letterwinners and two starters from last seasons squad. Junior Narissa Suber is the leading returning scorer, having averaged 14.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists last season. Classmate Nicole Hester followed her in scoring last season with eight points a game and is the teams leading rebounder at 5.1 a game.

SERIES RECORD VS. DREXEL
Drexel and Loyola have met just five times in the history of the programs. The teams met for the first time in the 1983-84 season with the Dragons earning the initial win 75-63. The Greyhounds earned their only win over Drexel the following season by a score of 88-71. The next three meetings all ended in W's for the Dragons, 58-44 in `87-88, 80-59 in `88-89 and 72-63 in `89-90.
