Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's and women's swimming and diving teams began competition at the Thomas Murphy Invitational with the meet's first 10 events on Friday night. The Greyhounds were led by a strong effort from its women with Tori Kamauff and Caitlin Cassidy leading the way.
Kamauff won the 200 IM in a time of 2:14.00, while Cassidy took first in the 50 Free in 24.86. Teammate Megan Royer was close behind, tapping in at 24.90.
The women also won the first event of the night, the 400 Medley Relay. Melissa White, Kim Krzaczek, Cassidy and Kamauff teamed up for a time of 4:01.02, more than 5 seconds faster than Johns Hopkins second-place team.
On the men's side, Brad Reeser took third place in both the 50 Free (21.87) and 500 Free (4:48.48) - edging out Jonathan Wertz in the 500 Free. Junior E.J. Verrico also took third in the 200 IM in 1:58.70 - one second ahead of teammate Jacob Drannan.
Both the men and women will resume competition at the Thomas Murphy Invitational on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the women's 200-yard freestyle relay. The meet's final 30 events will be broken up into a morning and afternoon session with the winner of the Thomas Murphy, Jr. Scholarship announced prior to the final session.
The women enter Saturday with a 61-46 lead on Johns Hopkins and a 94-4 lead on VMI. The men trail Johns Hopkins 63-41, but lead VMI 85-22.
