Lawrenceville, N.J. - The Loyola men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped dual-meet results to MAAC power Rider in Lawrenceville on Saturday afternoon. The men were edged out, 170-130, while the women fell, 179-121, to the Broncs in their first intercollegiate competition in over a month.
"Today was an exciting way to get back from our training trip," said Head Coach Brian Loeffler in reference to his team's New Year's training trip in Florida. "Rider has already beaten Marist this year, so we were expecting a tough meet."
Both the men and women received a number of impressive performances, including multiple-event winners like freshman Ozzy Torres and junior E.J. Verrico, both of whom swam new events at the meet.
Verrico won both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events for the Greyhounds, posting a time of 1:00.79 in the 100 Breast and 2:14.71 in the 200 Breast. Torres, meanwhile, won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events. He swam a 51.99 in the 100 Fly and 1:54.70 in the 200 Fly.
"I was very happy with today's performances," added Loeffler. "We had several team members swim new events today. Ozzy [Torres] and E.J. [Verrico] were very impressive in winning events they had not swam this year."
The men's 400 Free Relay team also took first with Zachary Oster, Jonathan Wertz, Jake Swiggett and Jacob Drannan clocking in at 3:17.21.
On the women's side, junior Tori Kamauff highlighted the day with a school record in the 200 Free with a time of 1:56.70. Kamauff also won the 500 Free, swimming Loyola's second-fastest time in school history, posting a 5:07.60 in the event.
Freshman Kim Krzaczek also won two events for the Greyhounds, taking first in the 100 Breast (1:08.28) and 200 Breast (2:31.19) events. As a team, the Greyhound women also won the 400 Medley Relay behind Melissa White, Krzaczek, Caitlin Cassidy and Megan Royer.
"The MAAC championship should be a great meet this year," said Coach Loeffler after the meet. "The conference has had so many fast swims already, it is shaping up to be a great meet."
Also of note for the Greyhounds, freshman Phil Scholz, who competes as a category S11 blind swimmer, set two American Records in the 100 and 200 Freestyle events.
"Philip continues to impress me as the season progresses," said Loeffler. "It seems like each time he enters the water he is capable of a record swim."
The Greyhounds return to the pool on Saturday, January 26 when they travel up Charles Street to face the Towson Tigers.
