Scholz To Compete At International Paralympic Championships

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands - The international swimming resume of Philip Scholz continues to grow. The senior-to-be at Loyola University will compete at the 2010 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships, August 15-21, 2010, at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium.

In past years, Scholz has competed at the 2009 IPC Swimming World Championships in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, the 2009 Paralympic CAN-AM Spring Championships in Oregon and the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, China.

Scholz, who is a member of the two-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Team at Loyola, is blind and competes in the S11 category of the Paralympic competitions.

He will have a busy program at the meet, swimming in seven events on six days for the U.S. squad. Scholz beings his Championships with the 200-individual medley on Sunday, August 15.

Scholz then swims the 100-breaststroke on Monday and follows with the 100-freestyle and 100-butterfly on Tuesday. Wednesday brings the 500-freestyle to his schedule, and he wraps up competition with the 400-freestyle on Thursday and 100-backstroke on Friday.

A resident of Mount Sianai, N.Y., Scholz holds 25 American Paralymipc Records in the S11 category.

He is the short-course meters record holder in the 50-, 100-, 200- and 400-freestyle, the 50- and 100-butterfly and the 200-individual medley.

In long-course meters, Scholz holds five records: the 800- and 1,500-freestyle, the 50-backstroke and the 50- and 200-butterfly.

Scholz also holds 14 short-course yards American records: the 50-, 100-, 200-, 500-, 1,000- and 1,650-freestyle, the 50- and 200-backstroke, the 50-, 100- and 200-butterfly, the 200-breaststroke and the 200- and 400-individual medley.

The Paralympic Championships will be broadcast live on ParalympicSport.tv. Scholz is one of 659 athletes from 55 countries who will be competing at the event.
