Wise Wins Two Events At Can-Am Open Swimming Championships

LA MIRADA, Calif. - Loyola University Maryland freshman Joe Wise won the S10 1500 meter freestyle and S10 200 meter butterfly titles at the 2011 Can-Am Open Swimming Championships at the Regional Splash Centre last weekend. The event, hosted by the U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), is one of the final warm-ups before the U.S. Paralympic - Swimming team trials and the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, England.

Wise was one of 10 U.S. swimmers to break an American record at the CanAms, as he won the 200 butterfly in 2:29.25 to better Matthew Lamping's time of 2:29.40 from July 23, 2010.

In addition, Wise - currently ranked No. 1 in the S10 world rankings in the 1500 meter freestyle - won that event in 17:51.35.

Former Greyhound Philip Scholz also competed at the meet, winning the S11 50 freestyle, 200 butterfly, 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle.

In all, a total of 176 swimmers from 11 countries took part in the championships.
