NEW YORK CITY – Three Loyola University Maryland student-athletes were named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch Lists as early contenders for the honors that recognize the best players in college lacrosse. Brian Sherlock and Pat Spencer of the men's team and
Bailey Mathis for the women's side are among the 50 included on each list.
The Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour, annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
Sherlock is the active career leader in scoring amongst NCAA Division I midfielders with 76 goals. He has is also Loyola's active leader in points with 119. A three-time All-Patriot League First Team honoree, Sherlock has earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honorable mention each of the last two seasons. He was named the Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 20 after leading Loyola with four goals and an assist two days prior at Johns Hopkins University.
Spencer put together one of the most prolific scoring seasons by a freshman in history last year as he tied the Loyola single-season record with 89 points on 37 goals and 52 assists. He was the first player to outright win the Patriot League Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year awards and was a USILA Second Team All-American. Spencer has scored two or more goals in all 21 of his collegiate games as of Feb. 25 and leads Loyola with six goals and nine assists for 15 points this season. He is the NCAA active career leader in assists per game (2.90) and is second in points per game (4.95).
Mathis was named the Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year by the conference's coaches prior to the 2017 campaign. She earned All-Patriot League First Team honors last year after being named to the second team in 2015. She finished the 2016 season with 16 ground balls, 16 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers while also holding three Patriot League attack foes scoreless.
Both Loyola teams are in action on the road Wednesday, March 1. The men play at Towson University while the women take on Princeton University. Both games will start at 7 p.m.
