DALLAS - The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team fell to SMU, 4-0, at Westcott Field Friday night in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Mustangs (5-1-0 overall) scored their go-ahead goal in the 16th minute when Jordan Cano threaded a perfectly placed throughball between a pair of Greyhound defenders for a streaking Garrett McLaughlin to finish.
SMU added a second goal at the 28-minute mark when Bryce Clark played a diagonal cross to the feet of Mauro Cichero inside the six-yard box.
Sophomore Barry Sharifi had an opportunity to cut Loyola's deficit to one in the 30th minute, when he put a shot from freshman Sam Brown on goal, but his attempt sailed into the hands of goalkeeper Michael Nelson.
Loyola (3-2-1) pressured through the start of the second half and was able to get the better looks at goal early on, but the Mustangs were the first find the back of the net, as Talen Maples lobbed a loose ball off a scramble into the goal in the 55th minute.
Before that, freshman Jordan Wiley had a shot blocked in the 49th minute, and junior Sam Carter and Sharifi sent a pair of junior Gabriel Carlsson's corner kicks at goal in the 50th and 53rd minutes, respectively. Nelson was there to make both saves though.
SMU closed out the match with one final goal in the 89th minute. Even though freshman Chase Vosvick made a pair of point-blank saves, he couldn't control either and the rebound of the second shot bounced right to Colten Habecker, who finished the opportunity.
Throughout the game, SMU held a 15-7 advantage in shots, while the Greyhounds had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Vosvick finished with six saves.
Loyola will remain on the road for its next two games, as it opens Patriot League play at Colgate on Friday, before heading to Cleveland State on Monday.
