BALTIMORE – Four Loyola University Maryland women's soccer players scored goals Monday night, and the Greyhounds downed visiting Delaware State University, 5-1, at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Sarah Bayer opened the scoring less than three minutes into the non-conference match.
Maddie Hart won control of a ball in the defensive end for Loyola and sent a pass to Kayleigh Gallagher.
Gallagher carried up-field before threading a through-ball to Bayer who ran onto the ball at the top of the box. Bayer was past the defense and went one-on-one with Delaware State goalkeeper Leslie Fazio. Bayer shot a hard ball over Fazio and into the center of the net for her second of the season.
Just under 20 minutes later,
Jourdan Ziff added to the Greyhounds' tally.
Hannah Hoefs hit a free kick from 40 yards over the defense where Ziff played it after getting past the Hornets' backs. She also found herself one-on-one with Fazio before sending a shot to the far post for a goal.
The prettiest goal of the game came in the 38
th minute off a
Mia Sardella corner kick. Sardella sent it into the middle of the box where it was knocked out to
Sarah Ensor on the wide-right side. Ensor centered a pass inside the six-yard box to
Ann-Kathrin Wolfram who back-heeled a one-timer for her first career goal at 37:33.
Shortly after halftime, Hoefs added to the advantage with a penalty kick in the 47
th minute. She earned the penalty after dribbling past a defender and drawing a foul just outside the six.
Loyola (5-7-0 overall) made it 5-0 in the 62
nd minute after a great run down the left side by
Gillian Borton. She crossed a ball from the end-line that was punched by Fazio. The ball stayed in play, and Delaware State's Daijah Norris knocked it into the goal for an own goal.
The Hornets (2-9-1) broke up the shutout in the 69
th minute, however, as they drew a penalty and Mary O'Conner converted.
Loyola finished with a 19-2 advantage in shots and a 9-0 lead in corner kicks.
The game was the final regular-season non-conference match of the year for the Greyhounds, who return to Patriot League action on Saturday, October 6, at College of the Holy Cross in a 1 p.m. game.
