Crusaders’ First-Half Goal Off Corner Stands Up In Win Over Women’s Soccer

WORCESTER, Mass. – Kelly Crowley headed in an Ang Seslija corner kick in the first half to stake College of the Holy Cross to a 1-0 lead that would turn into the final score during a Patriot League match against Loyola University Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

Seslija sent a corner to the back post where Crowley was waiting for a header past the Loyola defense to put the Crusaders in front 27:42 into the game.

To that point, the Greyhounds had outshot Holy Cross 6-1 in the match, and the Greyhounds ended with a 15-7 lead in the statistical category. Despite the consistent pressure – Loyola put seven of its shots on goal in the match – the Greyhounds did not find the netting.

"Today was another tough result for us on the road," said Head Coach Naomi Meiburger. "This group is really so close, and the chances we had today don't get much closer, but ultimately it just comes down to the finish. They finished their chance, and we did not take ours. I have to give credit to this group, though, and the resolve they showed in the second half, in particular to adjust our attack and create more chances. There are not many teams out there than can attack in multiple ways like we can with possession and transition, but we have to find a way to stick the ball in the net."

Loyola (5-8-0 overall, 1-4-0 Patriot League) had a flurry of shots in the first 17 minutes of the game, as Jourdan Ziff and Julia Gray both put strikes on goal that were saved by Holy Cross' Sophia Lettieri. Hannah Hoefs had two shots in that stretch that were blocked, as well as one that went wide, and Ann-Kathrin Wolfram also had an attempt off one of Loyola's two early corner kicks that sailed high.

Sumer Rahe made a save for Loyola on a Seslija shot in the 19th minute before Crowley's goal in the 28th.

The Greyhounds had three shots over the course of a minute late in the first half. Ariel Tillman and Hoefs each had shots blocked by defenders in the 37th minute, and Tillman put one on goal that was saved by Lettieri.

Both goalies made saves in the opening eight minutes of the second half to keep the score 1-0, and Loyola earned corners in the 55th and 64th minutes, but neither resulted in goals.

Rahe and the Greyhounds' defense kept Loyola within a goal despite Holy Cross (4-8-0, 2-3-0), Nicole Rivas stopped a Crowley shot on the goal-line off a corner in the 67th minute, and Rahe made saves on Seslija shots in the 72nd and 76th minutes.

Loyola returns to Ridley Athletic Complex for its next game, a Saturday, October 13, contest against Boston University at 1 o'clock.
