BALTIMORE – Boston University scored with less than four minutes to play Saturday afternoon, breaking a scoreless deadlock to post a 1-0 win in Patriot League women's soccer action over Loyola University Maryland.
Jenna Oldham made a run down the right sideline and cut to the side of the 18-yard box for the Terriers. She crossed a pass to the top of the six where Taylor Kofton was running into the play, but a Loyola defender deflected Oldham's cross into the netting for an own goal at 86:34.
The tally would stand up as the match's only goal and the eventual game-winner for first-place Boston University (7-7-2 overall, 5-0-1 Patriot League).
The Terriers had eight shots to Loyola's one in the first half, but the Greyhounds'
Sumer Rahe made four saves to keep them off the scoreboard.
Rahe made a spectacular sliding save in the 41
st minute when Shannon Keefe had a step on her defender and was one-on-one with Rahe. The Greyhounds' goalkeeper came out and slid to stop Keefe's hard shot, keeping the score at 0-0.
In the 43
rd minute, Kelly Park had a header for Boston University that deflected hard off the crossbar, and the ball rebounded out to Keefe who put a shot high.
Loyola had the most dangerous opportunity of the early second half as
Jourdan Ziff beat two defenders down the right side, cutting into the box. She took a hard shot that was knocked down by Boston University goalkeeper Morgan Messner.
Just over five minutes later, in the 63
rd minute,
Sarah Bayer beat her defender on a counterattack, getting free on the right of the 18, but her cross-goal shot slid just left of the post.
Rahe then made saves on shots by Chelsea Churchill and Anna Heilferty in the 66
th and 82
nd minutes, keeping the score, her stop on Heilferty coming while diving, full-extension to her right.
The Greyhounds return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they head to Washington, D.C., where they will face American University in a 3 p.m. conference match.
