Fawole Strikes Twice To Lead Men's Soccer To 3-1 Win Over Boston U.

By Maggie Schlicht '20

BALTIMORE - Josh Fawole scored twice to lead the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-1 victory over Boston University in a Patriot League matchup on Friday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.

The scoring started in the 42nd minute of play when Brian Saramago sent a pass to TJ Walker inside the top of the box. Walker's attempt went off the foot of a defender, but Fawole was there to put the ball in the back of the net.

After an exciting few minutes of play, Loyola looked to secure a 2-0 lead as Barry Sharifi scored off an assist from Saramago, tapping in his own rebound, but the goal was called back due to a penalty.

Boston University had a chance to equalize the game with a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, but Chase Vosvick made a diving save on John Siracuse's shot.

The second half was more of a midfield battle before a scoring outburst started in the 82nd minute. Stephen Nichols gained possession of the ball at midfield and popped it ahead to Fawole who used his speed to get past the defense and place the ball around the lone defender for his second goal of the game.

In the following minute, Morgan Lussi touched the ball to Gabriel Carlsson who sent a pass into the center of the box. Nico Brown was there to fend off his defender before tapping the ball around BU's goalkeeper for his second goal of the season.

The Terriers' Mana Chavali capped off the scoring by sending a left footed blast off the post and into the goal in the 85th minute.

The Greyhounds dominated the game in corner kicks leading, 9-2 and shots, 17-10. Vosvick finished the game with four saves, while Mike Bernardi collected seven for the Terriers.

Loyola returns to Ridley Athletic Complex on Tuesday at 6 p.m. to face Cleveland State in the second all-time meeting between the programs.
