Men's Soccer Closes Out Non-Conference With 4-0 Win Over Cleveland State

By Maggie Schlicht '20

BALTIMORE -
The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team faced off against Cleveland State for the second all-time meeting between the two programs Tuesday night. In a scoring outburst at Ridley Athletic Complex, Loyola shutout the Vikings, 4-0, in the team's final non-conference matchup.

The Greyhounds (8-3-1 overall) started the game with aggressive play, setting up multiple scoring chances by keeping the ball in the offensive end. In the 20th minute of play, Josh Fawole used his speed to chase the ball out of bounds and was fouled in the box. Brian Saramago took the penalty kick and earned his sixth goal of the season with a rip to the center of the net.

Loyola continued its offensive pressure and in the 44th minute of the game, Barry Sharifi sent a long ball pass from behind the midfield line to Nico Brown whose speed proved to be too much for the defense. He kicked a blast past the Cleveland State goalkeeper, Skylar Jeppesen, for his third goal of the season and second in two games.

The Greyhounds finished the first half leading in shots, 12-1, and corner kicks, 5-1.

On a corner kick set up in the 78th minute of play, Gabriel Carlsson scored with the shot spinning off the goalkeeper's hands, assisted by Stephen Nichols.

In the 85th minute of play, Saramago sent a long pass to the box from the far right side of the field that was interrupted by a sliding defenseman. The ball slid into the goal earning Saramago his seventh goal of the season and second of the game.

In Matt Dabrowski's first start this year, he recorded his first collegiate win and shutout.

Loyola will travel to face Holy Cross this Saturday at 1 p.m.
