WEST POINT, N.Y. - A first-half goal by
Barry Sharifi and a second-half insurance goal from
Josh Fawole got the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team a 2-0 win over Army West Point at Clinton Field Sunday night.
Â
The Greyhounds (6-3-1 overall, 2-1-1 Patriot League)Â dominated play in the first half and came away with a 1-0 lead at the break after scoring their fourth first-half goal of the season in the 20th minute. Senior
Gabriel Carlsson had played a long ball from midfield to junior
Brian Saramago out on the right wing. Saramago dribbled past defenders and sent a cross through the box which Sharifi ran onto and buried into the back of the net.
Â
Junior
Josh Fawole just missed heading in a pair of crosses from classmate
Davey Mason after that, in the 33rd and 36th minutes, and then Carlsson sent a free kick off the wall and the rebound into the hands of Army goalkeeper Justin Stoll in 40th minute.
Â
The Greyhounds came up empty on a pair of corner kicks in the first three minutes of the second half, before Mason one-touched a give-and-go opportunity with Saramago just over the top corner of the goal in the 53rd minute.
Â
Sharifi attempted to return the first-half favor to Saramago in the 55th minute, sending a cross into the box, but Saramago's attempt was inches away from knocking off of the left post.
Â
After sustaining pressure from the Black Knights (4-6-1, 1-3-0), the Greyhounds were able to capitalize on a counter attack in the 71st minute when Sharifi popped a ball to freshman
Stephen Nichols on the left wing. Nichols centered it for a streaking Fawole to bury into the back of the net.
Â
In goal, sophomore
Chase Vosvick made three saves, including punching a shot over goal post in the 77th minute and then made a diving save in the 89th minute to preserve his fifth shutout of the season and 11th of his career.
Â
Loyola will be back in action Friday night when it hosts Boston University at Ridley Athletic Complex. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Â
