Dartmouth Uses Strong Second Quarter To Take Control In Win Over Women’s Hoops

HANOVER, N.H. – Loyola University Maryland took a two-point lead in the waning seconds of the first quarter, but a Dartmouth College 3-pointer early in the second gave the Big Green a lead it would not relinquish as it went on to a 54-41 non-conference victory Friday night.

Anna Luce, who finished with 11 points for Dartmouth (1-0 overall), knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the perimeter moments into the second, giving the Big Green a 13-12 advantage. It would hold the Greyhounds (0-2) scoreless for the first 2:34 of the second before outscoring Loyola, 15-7, in the quarter.

An Emily Dryden free throw gave Dartmouth a 25-19 lead with 1:58 to play before halftime, but Bri Betz-White put the Greyhounds back within six on a 3-pointer at 1:41, the last points either team would score in the half.

Alexis Gray knocked down a jumper on the left side for Loyola 26 seconds into the second half, closing the gap to four before the Big Green scored seven of the next nine points to lead 32-23 on a Luce put-back at 5:47 in the third.

Betz-White hit another three for Loyola moments later, and after a Luce basket at 4:55 in the third, Isabella Therien scored in transition to bring the gap to six, 34-28, at 4:20.

Isalys Quinones made one of two free throws for Dartmouth with 2:47 left in the third quarter, starting a 7-0 run that pushed the Big Green lead to 41-28 on a Luce transition bucket with 37 seconds on the clock.

Loyola got back within 10 on a Therien three with 13 seconds left, but Dartmouth continued to lead by double-figures until a Taleah Dixon three for Loyola with 6:17 left in regulation cut the deficit to 47-38.

Dixon's three, however, was the last basket for Loyola until there were 20 seconds left in the game when she hit another 3-pointer.

Annie McKenna led Dartmouth with 13 points, while Quinones scored 10 to go with 12 rebounds.

Betz-White had 13 points to tie for game-high honors, while Stephanie Karcz pulled down 15 rebounds to go with four steals. Therien and Dixon each had seven points for the Greyhounds

Loyola stays on the road for its next game, a Thursday night game at Georgetown University set to tip-off at 7 o'clock.
