VILLANOVA, Pa. - Despite sophomore
Chase Vosvick saving a second-half penalty kick, Villanova scored off a counter attack in the 97th minute to lead the Wildcats to a 1-0 win over the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team in overtime Friday afternoon at Higgins Soccer Complex.
The Greyhounds dominated pressure and possession, leading the Wildcats in shots, 18-12, and corners, 11-4, but Loyola played with 10 men for the final 13 minutes and Villanova's counter resulted in Zach Zandi putting away the game winner.
Â
Loyola had a handful of near misses in the second half, with junior
Jonathan Sousa firing a bullet off the clearance of senior
Gabriel Carlsson's corner kick, but the ball sailed just over the cross bar two minutes into the half. Sousa also got ahold of another clearance in the 61st minute, but sent that one high, too.
Â
Carlsson tried to spark a quick counter in the 63rd minute, dribbling up the middle of the field before dishing it off to junior
Josh Fawole. Wildcat goalkeeper Carson Williams made a diving save on Fawole's shot to preserve his shutout, though.
Â
Vosvick then kept his shutout streak alive by turning back Zandi's penalty kick in the 79th minute and Conor Bradley's rebound attempt moments later.
Â
Junior
Barry Sharifi then sent a shot off the post to close out regulation with the two teams locked in a stalemate.
Â
Junior
Brian Saramago had Loyola's lone look at goal in the extra period, but he was unable to put his attempt on goal.
Â
Vosvick played all 96 minutes and turned back five shots, while Williams collected four saves for Villanova.

The Greyhounds will return to action next Friday when they host William & Mary at 7 p.m.
