QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior transfer
Davey Mason was credited with his first collegiate goal in the 78th minute to lift the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over St. John's at Belson Stadium Tuesday night.
Â
Loyola's first opportunity came in the 14th minute when
Nico Brown touched a ball to Saramago at the top of the box. Saramago's delivery was off the mark though.
Â
Gabriel Carlsson then created space just outside the top-center of the box before sending a shot into the arms of St. John's goalkeeper Tyron Matuta.
Â
Barry Sharifi had a pair of shots sail over the cross bar after that, in the 36th and 37th minutes, and
Eddy Rodriguez closed out the first-half scoring opportunities when he gathered a ball in the center of the field and blasted a shot off the hands of the goalkeeper.
Â
Stephen Nichols and Saramago created a scoring chance early in the second half, but Matuta again made a reaction-save on Saramago's attempt in the 63rd minute.
Â
That would be Loyola's best chance at scoring before the 78th minute when Mason dribbled down the left wing and played a ball into the box. St. John's defender attempted a leaping clear attempt, but Mason put enough pace on the ball to get it into the back of the net anyway.
Â
The Red Storm nearly had an equalizer in the 82nd minute, but their shot hit off the post.
Â
Loyola then had an opportunity for an insurance goal, but Brown was called offsides after putting away the rebound of Sharifi's shot attempt.
Â
For the game, the Greyhounds outshot the Red Storm, 11-5, and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Loyola also held St. John's to zero shots on goal as sophomore goalkeeper
Chase Vosvick recorded his second clean sheet of the season.
