Men's Soccer Falls At UConn In Double Overtime

STORRS, Conn. - The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team came up just short Saturday night, falling to the University of Connecticut, 3-2, in double overtime at Morrone Stadium.

Junior Brian Saramago scored the game's first goal in the seventh minute and senior Gabriel Carlsson scored the Greyhounds' equalizer in the 80th minute to force overtime. Abdou MBacke Thiam led the Huskies with three goals, including scoring the game winner in the 106th minute to help UConn remain undefeated at home this season.

Loyola pressured early, with juniors Davey Mason and Nico Brown sending a pair of dangerous corners into the box in the first six minutes of play. Junior Barry Sharifi then gained possession of a ball in the midfield and slipped it through a pair of defenders for Saramago to put away in the seventh minute.

Sharifi again gained possession of ball in the 29th minute and played it ahead to sophomore Sam Brown who touched it into the box for Saramago. Saramago's attempt sailed into the hands of Austin Aviza, UConn's goalkeeper, though.

The Huskies countered and found their equalizer later in the 29th minute, as Thiam headed in a cross from Dayonn Harris.

Loyola looked for a quick go-ahead goal after that, but Saramago had his attempt blocked in the 36th minute and then Sam Brown's shot in the next minute was saved by Aviza.

Neither team was able to take an advantage early in the second half but it was the Huskies that found their go-ahead goal in the 76th minute when Thiam cashed in on a rebound of a teammate's blocked shot.

Loyola took little time to even the game again, as Carlsson buried his first collegiate goal in the 80th minute. Saramago had his shot off a corner kick blocked, but Nico Brown touched the rebound out for Carlsson to run onto and finish.

Sam Brown looked to close out the game in the 83rd minute when the Huskies attempted to clear Carlsson's free kick from the box. His attempt sailed just over the crossbar, though.

Saramago had the lone shot for either team in the first overtime period, but he was unable to bend it inside the left post, as it ended in the side netting of the goal.

Thiam then scored the game-winner in the 106th minute when he volleyed a ball into the back of the net from inside the six-yard box.

For the game, UConn led in shots, 14-10, while Loyola held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Greyhounds will return to action when they begin conference play on Friday, as they host Colgate at 5 p.m. The defending Patriot League regular season (Loyola) and tournament (Colgate) champions will play the first game of a Loyola soccer doubleheader, with the Greyhounds' women's team hosting Navy at 7:30 p.m.
