PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore
Sam Brown redirected a cross from junior
Davey Mason into the goal in the 85th minute to get the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team a 1-0 win at Princeton Tuesday night.
Â
The game was delayed 30 minutes and played on the turf of Sherrerd Field at the Class of 1952 Stadium due to torrential rainfall, but the Greyhounds didn't let that slow them down. Princeton entered the contest doubling up on its opponents in shots, but the Greyhounds' defense limited the Tigers to nine shots while the offense exploded for 17, the most Princeton has given up this season.
Â
Loyola pressured early and out-shot Princeton 8-6 through the first half, even though the Tigers had only been allowing opponents 7.4 shots per game.
Â
Josh Fawole had Loyola's first look at goal in the 21st minute when he popped a ball from Brown over the cage.
Â
Gabriel Carlsson then sent a trio of shots at goal in a span of two minutes. He had two midfield blasts go over the crossbar and he sent a free kick off the fingers of Princeton goalkeeper Jacob Schachner but it was cleared off the line by a Tigers defender before turning into a goal.
Â
Jake Dengler continued Loyola's pressure, heading Carlsson's corner kick over the goal in the 29th minute, before a give-and-go between
Morgan Lussi and
Brian Saramago gave Saramago a look at goal from the top of the box. His strike went wide left, though.
Â
Nico Brown looked to have secured the advantage for the Greyhounds in the 35th minute, lobbing a longball from
Jacob Denison into the back of the net, but he was quickly called offsides. He followed it up by sending a wide-angled shot off the hands of Schachner to end the first-half scoring opportunities.
Â
The Greyhounds had another series of near misses in the opening minutes of the second half, as Saramago had a take away in the midfield, but his breakaway attempt was blocked in the box. After gathering the rebound, he blasted the follow-up shot wide right. Later in the game, he stepped into a free kick but, again, narrowly missed nipping the right post.
Â
Jonathan Sousa also had a chance miss the mark as he ran onto a ball that
Josh Fawole had heel-flicked to the right wing. The ball sailed wide of the goal in the 46th minute though. And in the 77th minute, Lussi's bicycle kick tried to trickle over the line, but Schachner was able to get to it before it turned into a goal.
Â
In goal for the Greyhounds, sophomore
Chase Vosvick stopped four shots to record his fourth clean sheet. With two-straight shutouts, he's run his consecutive shutout minutes to 200 straight.
Â
Loyola will return to conference play on Saturday when it travels to Navy for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Â
