With the 2018-19 school year officially starting on Monday, the Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse team welcomed 13 new players to the program over the weekend.
 
Eleven freshmen and two transfers will join the locker room when fall conditioning and practices begin for the Greyhounds: Liam Bateman (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield), Mitchell Cain (Victor, N.Y./Victor), Matt Hughes (Reston, Va./South Lakes/Mercer), Cam James (Wilsonville, Ore./Landon School), Scott Middleton (Phoenix, Md./Hereford), Corey Millhouse (North Haven, Conn./Hamden Hall/Virginia), Ross Pridemore (Atlanta, Ga./Homeschooled), Jack Raba (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire), Payton Rezanka (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), Chase Scanlan (Irving, N.Y./IMG Academy), Matt Stucchi (Rexford, N.Y./Hill Academy [Ontario]), Freeman Whitaker (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood) and Cam Wyers (Ottawa, Ontario/Everest Academy).

Before Loyola: Graduated from Loyola Blakefield High School in Towson, Maryland… Was a four-year varsity letterwinner in lacrosse while also earning three letters in volleyball… Scored 90 goals and had 66 assists for 156 points in his career for the Dons… Earned All-Metro First Team from The Baltimore Sun and All-Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) First Team as a senior in 2018… Was a finalist for the C. Markland Kelly Award as the state's top player after he senior year in which he scored 46 goals and had 30 assists… Helped the Dons reach the MIAA semifinals three times and also log wins over the No. 1 team in the country twice in the same year… Tallied 21 goals and the same number of assists as a junior after posting 15 and 10 during his 2016 sophomore season… Played club for FCA Lacrosse.

Senior High School where he earned four letters in football and three in lacrosse… Scored 60 goals and had 34 assists over his three varsity seasons… Also had 66 ground balls and nine caused turnovers… scored 24 goals and had 11 assists as a senior in 2018 after posting 35 and 15 in 2017… Named a US Lacrosse Academic All-American in 2018, earned All-League honors in 2017 and 2018 and was a Herb Fitch Senior All-Star in 2018… Named All-State as a midfielder in 2017… Earned Scholar-Athlete lacrosse recognition from 2016-18… Helped Victor win the 2016 New York State Class A title and the 2017 Class B crown… Helped Victor finish as runners-up in Class B in 2018… As a football player, earned All-Greater Rochester Second Team honors as a senior in 2017 and was an Eddie Meath Football All-Star… Helped Victor finish as New York State Class AA runners-up in 2016… Played club lacrosse for Sweetlax.

2018 (Freshman at Mercer University):  Named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team following his first season as a collegian... Also named to the 2017-2018 SoCon Academic Honor Roll… Finished sixth overall in NCAA Division 1 in Caused Turnovers… Set Mercer program record for caused turnovers (31) in one season… Ranked third on team in ground balls with 28…  Also had four goals and two assists during the season… College Crosse named him to its 2018 All-Freshman Team.   
 
Before College: Graduated from South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia, where he was a varsity lacrosse player four years and also played basketball… Earned USLacrosse All American Honors in 2017…  Recognized as a Washington Post All-Met First Team defensemen as a senior after scoring 26 goals, dishing out six assists, grabbing 130 ground balls and causing 86 turnovers... As a junior, also selected to the Washington Post All-Met Second Team when he scored 19 goals, recorded 6 assists, grabbed 145 ground balls and caused 77 turnovers… Recognized as the Liberty Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year as both a senior and junior… Earned Virginia First Team All-State and All-Region honors as a senior and junior… Helped lead the Seahawks to back-to-back undefeated records in Liberty Conference play and conference tournament champions as a junior and senior, advancing the team to both the regional and state tournament… Named to the All-Conference Team as a sophomore when he scored eight goals to go with four assists, picked up 85  ground balls and had 56 caused turnovers… Also selected as All-District as a freshman after scoring six goals, adding four assists, grabbing 15 ground balls and creating 13 caused turnovers… As a long-stick midfielder, led team, Liberty Conference, Region and State in caused turnovers and ground balls as a junior and senior… Was also an offensive threat in transition, finishing his four seasons with 59 goals and 20 assists… Played club lacrosse for Team Maryland Lacrosse in Frederick, Maryland.
 
Personal: Matthew Ingram Hughes… Son of Lisa and Kelly… Has an older Brother, John… Matthew and older brother John played together on the varsity lacrosse and basketball teams… Both swam together for ten years for the Reston Swim League… A certified swim instructor, Matt supported the Special Olympics as an aquatic volunteer… He participated for the Readers are Leaders program, mentoring elementary school children, and also served as a basketball camp counselor.

Before Loyola: Graduated from The Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland after spending his first three years of high school at Wilsonville (Ore.) High School… Was a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse… Earned All-Met First Team honors from The Washington Post, All-Maryland First Team and Adrenaline All-America honors in 2017 at Landon… Was also the team's Defensive Most Valuable Player while helping the Bears win a national title and finish No. 1 in multiple national polls… Led Landon to an IAC Championship in 2017… Started all three years at Wilsonville… Earned All-NWOC First Team honors as a sophomore and junior… Played football at Wilsonville, as well, earning All-NWOC First Team recognition as a junior… Played club lacrosse for Rhino Lacrosse, the West Coast Starz and 212 Lacrosse.

Tabbed to The Baltimore Sun All-Metro Second Team as both a junior and senior, as well… Four-time All-Baltimore County honoree… Received the Maryland Class 2A C. Markland Kelly Award as a junior… Scored 23 points, had a career-high 57 ground balls and 33 caused turnovers as a senior… Finished his junior season in 2017 with 76 points, 53 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers… Tallied 30 points, 50 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers as a sophomore in 2016, following his freshman campaign in which he scored 23 points and had 45 ground balls to go with 13 caused turnovers… Helped Hereford reach the 2018 state finals… The Bulls also made the state semifinals three times during his career… Named to the Free State Top 22 as a freshman… Was the leading scorer for Hereford's soccer team… Played club lacrosse for Looney's and Breakers.

2018 (Summer): Played for the Puerto Rican team at the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships in Israel… Helped Puerto Rico finish eighth as one of the team's leading scorers as a midfielder.
 
Before Loyola: Spent his first collegiate year (2017-18) at the University of Virginia and came to Loyola as a transfer for the 2019 season… Prep standout at Hamden Hall Country Day School in Hamden, Connecticut… Earned eight varsity letters, four each in football and lacrosse… Earned USLacrosse All-America honors… Was a four-time All-Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) First Team honoree in lacrosse… Also garnered All-New England recognition and was a two-time Most Valuable Player for Hamden Hall… Four-time New Haven Register All-Area lacrosse selection… Played for the Junior Olympics indoor lacrosse team… Played club lacrosse for Eclipse and Cardinals Lacrosse Club… Excelled on the football field, as well, earning three-time All-FAA First Team honors… All-New England Second Team twice and led Hamden Hall to a New England championship.

Before Loyola: Standout as a box and field player during his high school years… Was homeschooled from 10^th-12^th grades… Played varsity as an eighth grader at St. Edward's Vero Beach, Florida, in 2014… Earned All-District First Team, All-Area and All-Region honors while scoring 47 goals and assisting on 27… Attended The Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut, in 2015… Became the first freshman to earn New England West All-League First Team honors in over 20 years while at Taft after scoring 23 goals to go with 23 assists… Started as a running back and defensive back for Taft and was second on the team in touchdowns… Played for McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as a sophomore (2016), leading the team in scoring before going down with an injury… Did not play high school lacrosse as a junior or senior but was a top scorer for the Langley Thunder of the British Columbia Junior Tier 1 Box Lacrosse… In 2017, scored 97 points and was in the league's top 10 in scoring… Saw action with the Thunder's Junior A team for one game, scoring a goal and adding an assist… Played for Langley in 2018 in a pair of games before suffering a season-ending injury… Played club lacrosse for FCA and SweetLax.
