WASHINGTON, D.C. – American University cruised to an 82-38 win over the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team Wednesday night at Bender Arena.
Sophomore
Isabella Therien led the Greyhounds in scoring, with nine points, while junior
Stephanie Karcz grabbed a team-best six rebounds. With four steals, Karcz also moved into second place on Loyola's career records for steals with 254. She now trails only Katie Sheahin, who finished her career in 2013 with 347 steals.
Cecily Carl led five Eagles in double-figure scoring with a game-high 15 points.
The Eagles started hot, shooting 64.3 percent from the field in the first quarter, allowing them to build a 28-15 advantage at the first break. The Greyhounds limited American to just nine points in the second quarter, but Loyola was unable to make up the deficit, as the home team went into the halftime break with a 37-21 advantage.
Freshman
Taleah Dixon hit the first basket of the third quarter, but the Eagles went on a 15-0 run before senior
Alex Barazotti's 3-pointer at 4:34 halted the streak. Barazotti answered American's next field goal with a pull-up jumper and junior
Alexis Gray knocked down a pair of free throws, but the Eagles closed the half with the final 10 points to stretch their lead to 64-30 at the buzzer.
Junior
Molly Taylor's jump shot, followed by sophomore
Delaney Connolly's layup, started the fourth quarter scoring, but the deficit would be too large for the Greyhounds, as American cruised to the win.
Loyola will return home for a pair of games, beginning Sunday when it hosts Lafayette at 2 pm.
