Army West Point Runs Away From Women's Hoops In Final Three Minutes Of Play

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point used a 14-1 run over the final 3:01 to earn a 69-57 win over the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team at Christl Arena Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Taleah Dixon came up with a steal and converted a fast-break layup to give the Greyhounds a 56-55 lead with 3:16 to play in the fourth quarter, but Jess Lewis converted a long jumper to flip the lead back to the Black Knights and spark the game-ending run that gave the win to Army.

Dixon led Loyola with 17 points, while junior Stephanie Karcz contributed a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

For Army, Lewis led the way with a game-high 20 points and Madison Hovren added 18 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

Neither team could control the early going of the game, with the two squads combining for 11 first-quarter turnovers – seven of which were committed by the Black Knights. Facing a 13-4 deficit, Loyola put together a 5-0 run on a trey from sophomore Delaney Connolly and a jumper by Dixon to pull within four, at 13-9, but Army West Point knocked down its fourth 3-pointer to end the first quarter with a 16-9 advantage.

The Greyhounds continued to chip away at their deficit in the second quarter though, and ultimately used an 11-2 run to take its first lead of the contest and force Army to call a timeout, with the home team down 20-18 at the 5:07 mark.

Loyola wasn't done there though, as the Greyhounds' defense continued to hold the Black Knights without a basket for six-straight minutes. During that time, the Greyhounds' offense added another six points to their 22-5 run which turned a nine-point deficit, 13-4, into an eight-point advantage, 26-18.

Army broke its scoreless streak at the 2:36 mark of the second quarter and then connected on another 3-pointer to make it a one-possession game, 26-23, with 1:54 left to play in the half. Redshirt senior Bri Betz-White answered with her own triple and then Karcz converted a layup after a three-point play by the Black Knights to send the Greyhounds into the break with a 31-26 halftime lead.

The Black Knights outscored Loyola 9-4 in the first four minutes of the third quarter to tie the game at 35 all at the 6:06 mark. Karcz tied the game for a third time at 37-37 but the Black Knights regained the lead and wouldn't let Loyola even the score again until junior Alexis Gray's layup at the 6:33 mark of the fourth quarter moved the score to 50-50.

Loyola still wouldn't be able to regain the lead, as Hovren converted a pair of free throws for the Black Knights and then Libby Tacka's jumper gave Army a four-point advantage, 54-50, with 5:23 to play.

Karcz sandwiched layups around an Army free throw to bring Loyola within one, 55-54 at 3:48, before a steal and fast-break layup by Dixon gave Loyola its first lead, 56-55, since the 6:06 mark of the third quarter.

The Black Knights had a quick answer though, knocking down a jumper. Lewis then knocked down her fifth triple of the game to give Army a four-point lead with 2:02 to play. Dixon's free throw brought it back to a one-possession game, 60-57, but the Black Knights scored the final nine points of the game for the 69-57 victory.

Loyola will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Boston University at Reitz Arena for Field Trip Day. Tipoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
