BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team erased a 22-point second-half deficit, but it was unable to get past Boston University Wednesday afternoon, as the Terriers used overtime to escape Reitz Arena with a 64-62 win over the Greyhounds on Field Trip Day.
Sophomore
Isabella Therien led all players with 21 points in the game, while junior
Stephanie Karcz turned in her 18th career double-double. Karcz finished with 12 points and a game-high 20 rebounds, one shy of tying her school record set last season.
Freshman
Taleah Dixon also reached double figures in scoring for the fourth-straight game, as she contributed 12 points and added a game-high four assists for the Greyhounds.
For Boston University, Katie Nelson led the way with 17 points, while Lauren Spearman added 15.
Defense prevailed early on, with neither team scoring until the 6:40 mark of the first quarter. Karcz answered the Terriers with a layup to keep the game even, and the first quarter was tied three more times after that, as sophomore
Delaney Connolly, Therien and Dixon all answered Boston University's next points. Dixon's and-1 conversion gave Loyola its first lead, 10-9, but the Terriers closed out the period with a layup for an 11-10 advantage at the first break.
Boston carried its momentum into the second quarter and ended the half with a 35-18 advantage.
Despite allowing the Terriers to stretch their lead to 22, Loyola called a timeout at the 7:35 mark, down 42-20. From that point on, the Greyhounds outscored Boston University, 21-10, and ended the quarter with an 11-point deficit, 52-41.
The Terriers scored the first points of the fourth quarter, but Loyola continued to work and ultimately held Boston without a point for a span of 9:13. During that time, the Greyhounds strung together a 16-0 run to take their first lead since the first quarter, with Connolly's layup at 1:01 giving Loyola a 57-55 advantage.
Boston University used a free throw with 33 seconds to go to pull within one, 57-56, before redshirt senior
Bri Betz-White's free throw put Loyola back in front by two, 58-56, with 24 seconds to go. The Terriers knocked down a pair of free throws after that though, sending the game to overtime.
The Terriers scored first in the extra period, before layups from Therien and Dixon flipped the lead back to the Greyhounds, 62-60, with 1:52 play. A free throw and a layup gave Boston a one-point advantage, 63-62, with 51 seconds to go. A series of turnovers ensued before Loyola gained possession and called a timeout with 14 seconds left. The Greyhounds were unable to convert on their possession and Boston secured the two-point victory with one final free throw as time expired.
Loyola will return to action on Saturday when it heads to Holy Cross. Tipoff is set for noon at the Hart Center.
