First-Half PK Sends Men’s Soccer to 1-0 Defeat at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Nick Jennings converted a penalty kick with 4:12 remaining in the opening half, and Lehigh withstood a barrage of shots from Loyola University Maryland men's soccer to hold on for a 1-0 victory on Saturday night.

The Mountain Hawks (8-3-1, 4-0-1 Patriot League) move four points ahead of the Greyhounds (5-7, 3-2) in the conference standings while halting Loyola's three-game winning streak. The visitors were unable to break through offensively despite a 25-10 advantage in shots, with 17 of those attempts coming in the second half alone.

Will Smith made seven saves to secure the clean sheet for Lehigh, while Chase Vosvick had three stops on the other end. Jennings' PK was perfectly placed into the top left corner, with the sophomore recording his first goal of the season in the process.

Josh Fawole and Brian Saramago each managed six shots for Loyola, with Fawole forcing four saves out of Smith. Barry Sharifi added five shots in the defeat.

Perhaps the best chance for the Greyhounds came with just under 10 minutes left in regulation, as Davey Mason sent a cross past Smith and into open space with two Loyola players nearby. Neither, however, were able to manage a shot on target.

Mason had the final attempt with 2:31 left, directing an effort from the left side which was secured by Smith. Lehigh improves to 4-0-1 at home this season and 4-0 all-time at Ulrich Sports Complex against the Greyhounds.

Loyola's 25 shots were the most for the program since joining the Patriot League in 2013, surpassing a 24-shot effort against Holy Cross last season.

The Greyhounds return to Ridley Athletic Complex on Tuesday, hosting NJIT in a non-conference game beginning at 7 p.m.
