Men’s Soccer Posts 4-1 Non-Conference Win over NJIT

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland men's soccer scored two goals in each half and came within seconds of a shutout in a convincing 4-1 home victory over NJIT on Tuesday.

Josh Fawole and Barry Sharifi struck for the Greyhounds (6-7) in the opening half, while Brian Saramago and an own goal accounted for the offense after the intermission. Chase Vosvick made three saves to secure his fourth win of the season in goal.

The Highlanders (5-4-4) avoided the clean sheet on a half-volley into the top left corner by Rene White with 34 seconds remaining in regulation.

The two teams combined for 33 shots in a game which was played at a frantic pace throughout. Loyola opened the scoring in the 30th minute, with Fawole putting home a rebound in front after Saramago's initial shot from outside the box was stopped by goalkeeper Victor Pujades.

Fawole netted his fourth goal of 2019 on the play, and his drawn foul in the box set up the home side's second strike less than three minutes later. Sharifi stepped up to take the spot kick, beating Pujades on a low effort into the right corner for his team-leading fifth goal this fall.

The Highlanders had a chance to cut the deficit in half after drawing a PK of their own in the 55th minute, but White had his attempt rattle off the post.

Ten minutes later, the Greyhounds were up three. After Sharifi had a free kick stopped by Pujades, Davey Mason tracked down the rebound and sent a cross into the box right off an NJIT defender and into the back of the net.

Saramago rounded out Loyola's scoring in the 84th minute, taking a corner kick from Justin Ingram and firing a deflected shot into the right corner. The goal was his fourth of the season and 30th overall at Loyola, while Ingram picked up his fourth assist.

White's goal for the visitors in the final minute was his 12th of the fall, a mark which is tied for fourth in all of Division I.

The Greyhounds came out on top despite being outshot (18-15) for the first time in eight contests. They also surrendered more corner kicks (5-4) for the first time since the season opener at NC State on August 30.

Loyola improves to 4-1 at Ridley Athletic Complex on the year, outscoring opponents by a 14-5 margin at home. The Greyhounds are back on the road on Saturday, traveling to Colgate for a Patriot League tilt beginning at 2:30 p.m.
