WASHINGTON – Loyola University Maryland's swimming and diving programs began the 2019-20 season in style on Saturday, winning 25 of 32 contested events to record a pair of victories over host American.

The men, who took first in 14 of 16 competitions and had the top three finishers in eight races, topped the Eagles by a score of 217-72. The women won by a final margin of 179-120 after winning 11 events overall.

Max Verheyen made an immediate impact in his collegiate debut for the men, winning all three of his individual races by comfortable margins. Jimmy Hayburn contributed to four victories (two individual, two relays), while Jack Still swept the diving events for the Greyhounds.

Verheyen topped the field in the 1000 freestyle (9:50.15), 200 breaststroke (2:09.11) and 200 individual medley (1:54.71). All three of his wins came by four seconds or more. Hayburn teamed up with Jonathan Brooks, Jay Venit and Sung Lee for a win in the 200 medley relay (1:34.47) to begin the afternoon, and he joined Colin Anderson, Brendon Kolar and Reid Hussey for a first-place showing in the 200 free relay (1:25.41) to conclude the meet. Loyola's men's squad had the top three finishers in both relays.

Hayburn, Anderson and Kolar also claimed the top three spots in both sprint free events. Hayburn won the 50 free with a time of 20.84, and he completed the 100 free in a winning mark of 46.71.

Still beat out two competitors in both diving events, winning the 1-meter with 256.42 points and 3-meter with 231.45 points. Other individual winners for the men included Conor Rutigliano in the 100 backstroke (52.56), Mark Boran in the 200 back (1:55.24), David Sears in the 100 breast (58.16), Hussey in the 500 free (4:45.74) and Lee in the 100 butterfly (50.54).

Lee nearly swept the fly events, missing out on first place in the 200 fly by just one-hundredth of a second after touching the line in 1:51.89. Other runners-up were Dean Spicer in the 1000 free, Dylan Champagne in the 200 free, John Sakovich in the 200 breast, Boran in the 100 back, Rutigliano in the 200 back and Venit in the 100 breast.

Megan Dickey and Elizabeth Walsh each contributed to three victories on the women's side. Both were on Loyola's winning 200 medley relay squad along with Devin Cronin and Anne Hayburn to begin the meet, as the foursome completed the race in 1:46.10.

Dickey then won the 50 free in a time of 24.02, and she beat out teammate Claire Bowser for a victory in the 100 free with a mark of 53.88. Walsh's first individual victory came in the 200 fly (2:07.64), and she out-touched Emma Schouten by seven-hundredths in the 200 IM (2:09.25 to 2:09.32).

That 200 IM was one of three top-two showings for Schouten on the afternoon. Schouten (2:19.63) beat out Cronin (2:21.29) in the 200 breast, while Cronin (1:03.81) edged Schouten (1:04.95) in the 100 breast.

Loyola women dominated the two diving events, led by a pair of first-place finishes from Jessica Stolfi. In the 1-meter, Stolfi edged out Anna Donato by just over three points (213.82 to 210.22), while Stolfi (196.12), Elizabeth Berta (185.85) and Donato (157.87) captured the top three spots in the 3-meter competition.

The Greyhound women had two additional 1-2 finishes in the pool. Elizabeth Romano (11:00.91) claimed first place over Morgan Hall (11:05.40) in the 1000 free, and Emily Koegl (56.24) and Hayburn (57.36) took the top two spots in the 100 fly. Sophie Jahan, Alden Coyne, Bowser and Dickey wrapped up the afternoon with a runner-up effort in the 200 free relay.

Loyola is back in action next Friday, hosting Boston College in its home opener at the Mangione Pool at 5 p.m.
