LEWISBURG, Pa. –
Jonathan Sousa scored his first collegiate goal near the midpoint of the second half on Wednesday, a tally that stood up as the game-winner as the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team earned a 1-0 Patriot League victory against Bucknell University.
Sousa's goal, combined with
Matt Dabrowski's second career clean sheet, helped Loyola (3-6-0 overall, 2-1-0 Patriot League) post its first-ever win against the Bison (2-4-3, 0-1-2).
In the 64
th minute,
Davey Mason had a shot blocked near the top-left of the six, but he regained his footing and dribbled the ball clear before passing to
Albert Kang.
Kang dribbled left and then back right against the Bucknell defender at the top-left of the 18, sending a right-footed pass to Sousa on the far-right side where he one-timed a shot past Bison goalkeeper Luke Smith to put the Greyhounds on the board. Kang picked up his first collegiate point, while Mason's assist was his team-leading third of the season.
The Greyhounds continued to pressure Smith, earning a corner kick just 51 seconds later, but Sousa's shot would end up being Loyola's last of the match.
Nick King had the Bison's best chance to equalize, striking a shot from the top-right in the 85
th minute that curled outside the goal frame and just away from harm.
Loyola finished with a 10-6 lead in shots and 7-1 advantage in corners. Sousa's goal was one of just two shots on goal in the match.
Loyola put early pressure on the Bison in the 11
th minute when
Jordan Wiley, who made the first start of his collegiate career in the game, slotted a shot from the low right side that forced Bucknell goalie Luke Smith to make a sliding stop, resulting in a Loyola corner kick.
After a second Greyhounds corner kick,
Eddy Rodriguez got off a shot from the top-right, but it was off frame. A foul by the Bison in the 17
th minute just a pace outside the 18 setup a
Barry Sharifi direct kick that clipped the Bucknell wall and went out for another corner kick.
In all, the Greyhounds outshot Bucknell, 7-2, in the first half and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Loyola returns to Ridley Athletic Complex on Saturday, October 5, to host Lafayette College at 1 p.m. in a Patriot League tilt.
