BALTIMORE –
Barry Sharifi scored twice, while
Daniel Osuji and
Josh Fawole added solo strikes in a 4-2 victory for Loyola University Maryland men's soccer over Lafayette on Saturday.
Brian Saramago chipped in a pair of assists for the Greyhounds (4-6, 3-1 Patriot League), who handed the Leopards (7-3-1, 3-1) their first conference defeat of the season.
Matt Dabrowski made two saves in goal to improve to 2-0 on the year for the home side.
Most of the offense came during a frantic eight-minute stretch late in the first half. Osuji opened the scoring 29:36 into the contest, heading in a free kick from
Justin Ingram for his second goal of 2019.
Sharifi's first strike came five minutes later, as he took a perfect back foot pass from Saramago and beat Lafayette goalkeeper Alex Sutton in a 1-on-1 situation on the right side. Kristinn Pétursson added an assist on the play, picking up his first collegiate point in the process.
The Leopards briefly halved the deficit on a header from James Gibson in the 37th minute, but the Greyhounds restored their two-goal advantage just 1:02 later. Fawole drew a foul inside the box, and Sharifi calmly blasted an effort into the top left corner for his team-leading fourth goal of the year. Sharifi is now up to 51 points (17 G, 17 A) through 62 career games at Loyola.
That 3-1 score line held until there were just under 15 minutes left in regulation, when Lafayette again pulled within one through a shot in front by Sebastian Varela. The Greyhounds once again had a quick answer, with Saramago sending a 79th minute cross from the left side to Fawole, whose second attempt in front beat Sutton to make it 4-2.
With his two assists, Saramago has 75 points (29 G, 17 A) as a Greyhound, a total which ranks tied for 19th in program history.
The Loyola backline did not allow a shot on goal the rest of the way following Fawole's strike, closing out the win and moving the Greyhounds to 4-2 in their last six games overall.
Loyola moves briefly out of Patriot League play on Tuesday, traveling to Mount St. Mary's for a non-conference tilt beginning at 7 p.m.
