BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland hit .326 to win the opening set, but Colgate University rallied thereafter to win in four, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19, Friday night Patriot League action in Reitz Arena.
Â
Katie Forsythe fell one dig short of her third career 40-dig outing, but she still finished with a season-high 39, while
Ann Ernst tallied 23 kills for an even 50 in two matches this week.
Forsythe's 39 digs are the most by a Patriot League player, and they are tied for 10th most by an NCAA Division I player this year. She now has 532 digs this season through 23 matches, good for eighth in Patriot League single-season history; Forsythe set the conference record with 697 last year as a freshman.
With five more kills, Ernst will move into a tie for 10
th in career kills in the Patriot League with 1,458; she is currently fourth in school history.
Â
Ernst finished the first set with eight kills on 10 swings without an error, while Forsythe had 11 of her digs in that frame as the Greyhounds (10-13 overall, 3-6 Patriot League) overcame an early 12-10 deficit to go up 19-14 on a
Molly Jarvis kill.
Â
Moments later, Ernst had a kill to make it 22-16, and while Colgate (16-5, 9-0) got within four, 24-20 on an Alli Lowe kill,
Abby Hamilton closed it for the Greyhounds with one of her own to put Loyola up a set.
Â
The Greyhounds scored five of the first six points in the second set, forcing a Raiders timeout. Colgate came out of the break and quickly tied it at 8-8, taking a lead at 10-9 for the first time in the second.
Â
Loyola would get back to even at 10-10 on an Ernst kill, but the Raiders scored four in a row and Loyola got back to within one just twice more in the second.
Â
Ernst had a kill to put Loyola in front, 19-18, in the third, and
Megan Bukala sided out with a kill for the Greyhounds at 20-19, but four in a row by the Raiders swung the momentum back in their favor to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Â
Loyola again led in the early-going of the fourth, taking an 11-10 advantage on an Ernst kill, but Colgate tallied 11 of the next 14 points for a 21-14 lead that it would hold onto for the remainder of the match.
Â
Hamilton added 12 kills for Loyola, while Jarvis had nine and Bukala added eight. Ernst, who had a career-high 27 kills earlier this week at American University, had a double-double with 18 digs, while Hamilton had the same with 13.
Â
The Greyhounds continue Patriot League play on Saturday, October 26, when they host College of the Holy Cross at Johns Hopkins' Goldfarb Gym in a 3 p.m. start.
