Women’s Basketball Rolls Past FDU, Secures First Victory of 2019-20

HACKENSACK, N.J. – Laryn Edwards netted a career-high 17 points, while Stephanie Karcz chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and six steals for Loyola University Maryland women's basketball in a 75-46 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday.

Emily McAteer added 11 points off the bench for the Greyhounds (1-2), who outscored the Knights (0-2) by a 42-16 margin in the second half to break open what had been a three-point game at the intermission. Loyola's 29-point win is its largest since a 74-30 triumph over Lipscomb to begin the 2016-17 season.

Edwards scored nine of her 17 points in a decisive 23-9 third quarter for the visitors. She hit 6 of 9 shots from the field overall, including 4 of 5 attempts from 3-point range, and she also dished out three assists in the win.

Karcz finished one rebound shy of a 20th career double-double, but she did surpass 10+ points for a 46th time in her Loyola career. She also matched Alexis Gray with a team-high four assists in the contest.

The Greyhounds held a 16-6 advantage late in the first quarter. FDU, though, stormed back with a 10-0 run to level the score after 10 minutes. The game remained tight throughout the second quarter, with Loyola ultimately taking a 33-30 lead into the break.

A 7-0 run for the Greyhounds to begin the third quarter set the tone for the second half. FDU pulled within single digits for the final time at 45-36 midway through the frame, but a Bri Rozzi jumper began a 11-3 stretch for the visitors which extended the margin up to 17 points entering the fourth. The 29-point margin at the end was Loyola's largest lead of the contest.

McAteer hit 5 of 10 field goal attempts to reach double figures for the first time in her collegiate career. Grey added eight points to go along with her four assists, while Delaney Connolly totaled seven points and five boards.

Loyola forced 23 FDU turnovers and limited the home side to 30.8 percent shooting from the floor (16-52).

The Greyhounds now have a week off before hosting Howard in their 2019-20 home opener at Reitz Arena next Wednesday. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
