BALTIMORE –
Stephanie Karcz recorded her 20th career double-double, and
Delaney Connolly matched a season-high with 15 points, but it was not enough for Loyola University Maryland in a 75-69 defeat to Howard at Reitz Arena on Wednesday.
The Greyhounds (1-3) used a 7-0 run to level the score at 69-69 with 51 seconds remaining. The Bison (3-2), though, scored the final six points of the contest, with Imani Bryant scoring the go-ahead layup with 30 seconds left in regulation. Howard came out on top despite committing 28 turnovers, including 15 in the second half.
Karcz recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds, and she also had six of Loyola's season-high 15 steals. Connolly chipped in seven rebounds, three assists and three steals to go along with her team-best scoring total.
Howard took a 32-29 lead into the intermission after a back-and-forth opening 20 minutes. Loyola started the second half strong, with a Connolly layup giving the home side its largest lead of seven points at 46-39 with 2:09 left in the third quarter.
The Bison responded with a 30-16 run over the next nine minutes of game action. A 3-pointer by Gia Thorpe made it 69-62 with 3:01 remaining in regulation.
A 3-point play by
Laryn Edwards and four Karcz free throws leveled the score in front of a roaring crowd of over 500 fans at Reitz. Loyola, however, missed two attempts at the charity stripe after Bryant's go-ahead layup, and Ayonna Williams made two free throws at the other end to make it a two-possession game in the closing seconds.
Edwards finished in double figures for a second-straight game, contributing 11 points and seven rebounds in the defeat.
Emily McAteer added nine points off the bench, and
Alexis Gray totaled eight points and a team-high five assists for the Greyhounds.
Howard's Sarah Edmond led all scorers with 20 points (6-10 FG, 4-6 3FG), while Krislyn Marsh finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the visitors.
Eight of Karcz's 11 points came from the free throw line, and Loyola shot 16 for 20 from the charity stripe overall. The Greyhounds scored 23 points off of Howard's 28 giveaways.
Loyola returns to action on Sunday afternoon, traveling to St. Francis Brooklyn for a matchup beginning at 1 p.m.
