BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. –
Stephanie Karcz totaled 24 points, three shy of her career-high, and
Ava Therien added a season-high 12 points off the bench in an 89-78 road defeat for Loyola University Maryland at St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday.
Jade Johnson led all scorers with 25 points for the Terriers (2-3). Ally Lassen (23 points, nine rebounds) and Nevena Dimitrijevic (22 points) also surpassed the 20-point marker for SFC.
Karcz chipped in 11 rebounds, six assists and six steals for Loyola (1-4). The double-double was her second-straight and 21st overall for the Greyhounds, and she managed six thefts for a third game in a row.
SFC, which scored over 20 points in every quarter, shot 50.8 percent (31-61) from the field overall and hit 18 of 24 free throw attempts.
A jumper by
Laryn Edwards gave the visitors a 30-28 lead with 4:15 remaining in the opening half. The Terriers, though, used a 16-6 run to jump ahead 44-36 before
Bri Rozzi hit a 3-pointer just prior to the intermission.
Six of Therien's points came during an 8-0 Loyola run to trim the deficit to 61-59 with 1:05 left in the third quarter. SFC responded with five-straight points of its own to conclude the frame, and the Greyhounds could get no closer than five during the final 10 minutes of game action.
Delaney Connolly finished with 11 points and six rebounds in the defeat, hitting 3 of 4 attempts from 3-point range, and
Alexis Gray supplied nine points and a career-high seven assists.
The second of Karcz's six helpers was the 300th assist of her collegiate career, as she becomes the ninth Greyhound in team history to reach that figure. Karcz also continues to lead Division I in steals per game (5.0) this season, and she is within 11 steals of matching Katie Sheahin's program record of 347.
Karcz's 24 points were her most in a game since a 26-point effort against Bucknell on Feb. 14, 2018. Her career-high of 27 was established at Marquette earlier that season. Karcz is up to 981 points overall, leaving her 19 away from becoming the 22nd Greyhound to reach 1,000.
After recording 21 assists against Howard on Wednesday, the team's most in a game since Jan. 28, 2017, Loyola added 18 more assists this afternoon. Loyola's 16.4 assists per game are ranked second among Patriot League teams on the year.
The Greyhounds return to the court on Friday, traveling to Florida Atlantic to begin a two-day Thanksgiving week tournament. Loyola faces the host Owls at 2 p.m. and will take on either Kansas or Wright State the following afternoon.
